Why don't people want to go to tj just because there are "too many" asians?

Few are blind to the race of those admitted and not admitted. The Board of Supervisors and the School Board can't claim they care about "One Fairfax" and then turn a blind eye to a magnet school whose student body is overwhelmingly Asian and largely drawn from only four or five of the county's 25 or so middle and secondary schools.

Where were you when NBA is overwhelmingly black and government security guards are overwhelmingly black?

Give me a break! You've already had a huge "hook" for being an URM. You literally only needed to understand algebra to get into Harvard while others probably had to get Olympiad gold, and you still couldn't make it. You're blaming others and the system (which is already heavily rigged in favor of you) for this?

The last few posts explain why TJ’s days as a magnet are numbered. Who really wants to go to bat to defend a school that some think they uniquely deserve and from which other minorities should be excluded because they can always work as low-paid security guards? Surprised they didn’t complain about how few Asians are working as house cleaners and in meat processing plants.

No the law says race cant be considered in admissions - the admissions are based on individual merits or at least the match with the admissions criteria. The group-think racial labelling is a post-hoc political addition that a lot of fairfax county citizens would prefer not to add into the picture.

It is the individual admission criterua1 which should be made more transparen to assuage any sense of "unfairness" towards some groups and not otherst

One of the standard arguments from the TJ crowd is that it's jealous whites who want to shut down TJ as a magnet and that they'd have no problem if the school was 70% white vs. 70% Asian.

This ignores the fact that the NAACP has filed the complaints about AAP policies and TJ submitted with the Department of Education. And if you look at who has taken the lead in challenging the admissions practices at NYC's selective magnet schools, it's a Hispanic school chancellor.

The local Asians are just as eager to protect their privileges as whites in Fairfax County have ever been.

Duh! What would you expect? No one willingly give up their privilege. Everyone fights FOR privilege. Look at the Harvard BS. They actively discriminate against Asians. I don't see anyone rolling up their sleeves to fight against that machine.. Everyone justifies it in the name of "holistic" admissions, admitting idiots in the name of athletics and other bullcrap. How about someone fighting WITH the Asians on that one?

Harvard understands that it is not in their best interests as an institution and as a business to be overwhelmingly Asian.

TJ is a remarkable case study in this matter as applications from white students have dropped by over 50% in the past 10-12 years, reflecting that despite its remarkable success as an institution, it's not somewhere that folks necessarily want to go. You would think that the total numbers of applications would have skyrocketed over the past 20-odd years, given the staggering growth in the area, the growth of the admitted class from 400 to nearly 500, and the school's repeated appearances in national rankings.

But in the end, you have roughly the same number of applicants as you had 20-25 years ago....around 3,000. There are many reasons that kids do not apply to TJ, and it being "too Asian" is but one of them - but there are a lot of other factors that are at least tangentially impacted by the dominance of the Asian (and increasingly South Asian) population.

It’s more than that actually. My DC was the only white kid in many classes.

It was 71.5% Asian in March 2020 and a substantial number of students in the "Two or More" races category (4.7%) are part Asian. The black and Hispanic enrollment combined is under 5%.

Good observations and opinions.. would make for a good article but then what? I'll keep my vote on TJ staying the way it is for a looong time and South Asians becoming more dominant in TJ and in general most other domains.. Harvard does what it does and sugar coats for public consumption that everyone drinks up and regurgitates elsewhere. Not going down that rabbithole, again..
