+1. Very pretty. It's really depressing to read locals know to avoid it FOR DECADES?! This isn't timbuktu, it's across the street from two of the most prestigious colleges in the world.

Come on, don't get hysterical. Yes, crime is disturbing. But it's also very easy to avoid. And no, just because it's a "prestigious university" does not mean its immune from crime. NYC is actually very safe, much safer than it was in the past. This is a horrible tragedy, but NYC is not a war zone.

It is for women

no, it is no. credentials: woman who lived there for 10 yrs.

The nightly news had a newscaster that showed the staircase.

"Possible she took the 2 train up from downtown Manhattan and forgot to transfer at 96th. Then tried to walk from 116th and Lenox. Happens frequently. Perps robbed/stabbed her when she was crossing the park, which you have to do from that side."

I did this once when I first I started at Columbia (in 2005) and it was sketchy as HELL. I vowed never to make that mistake again!

Themes I keep coming across from students and alums:

-- this park has been sketchy and dangerous since the 1970s
-- University bends over backwards to conceal this fact
-- University PD and NYPD doesn't have nearly enough presence in this area
-- many current female students admit to crossing the park to get home, oblivious to the dangers, i.e. 'could have easily been me' sort of shock

The fact they stabbed her face, isn't that dancing with hate crime? You don't stab a face to kill someone, do you?

I’m looking at Google street view, the top of the park stairs are really elegant and inviting. And if it’s truly THAT unsafe why aren’t there full time security and NYPD post there?

It's called being aware of your surroundings in the middle of a city - plus the history with Morningside Park and Columbia goes back decades. It's really not shocking at all unless you've never left suburbia. NYC and Columbia are very safe these days but yeah, most people knew not to go into that park alone.

How would someone from out of state know anything about that?

+1. Especially someone from a safe place (victim was from C’ville, I believe) who the university is feeding misinformation to about safety and concealing waves of violent crime that takes place literally across the street.

Wait, what? Cville safe? You don't remember the murder of UVA student Hannah Graham, kidnapped, raped, and murdered five years ago by Jesse Matthew, who'd also killed a Virginia Tech student years before that?

I bet Hannah and her family thought Charlottesville was safe.

It is not my intention for this to sound condescending but you sound incredibly naive.

charlottesville is still not super safe. The son of a family friend was jumped last month after partying off of Main Street by 5 guys, they beat the crap out of him, broken his jaw, eye socket and he lost several teeth. police have not been very helpful and he has had to drop out of school for a semester because of all the surgeries.

Someone at Facebook wiped the perp's profile. Gee, wonder why...

Looks freakin' gorgeous. We can all see how someone new to the city would think this was perfectly safe, especially so when surrounded by all the wealth and new development on campus at the top of stairs. Columbia and Barnard administrators who concealed how dangerous this edge of campus has been for DECADES need to be held accountable. As does the mayor and the NYPD.

She's white; no chance of a hate crime.

That’s the stairs from the bottom. different story when you’re on them. Literally textbook location to get mugged. yes, Columbia should warn students but people in cities also have to learn basic street smarts.

My heart breaks for the horror that poor child must have felt being violated by this monster. May she Rest In Peace for eternity.

The monster will be fresh meat in the system and will receive was is deserved.

A) A 13-year-old was on Facebook?

It is very sad when a young woman can't go jogging next to her college. Hopefully the 3 hood rats get decades of time. It is unbelievable the posts on here
defending the hood rats due to socioeconomic status. If it was your daughter, wife or mother savagely killed by hood rats you would not be defending the murderers.
