Condolences to the family and classmates. They need more cameras in that area. So sad.

I don't know much about NYC and I was doing some research on this area and found this article - it sounds like that park has had issues with attacks recently. Very sad.

Horrible. A parent's worst nightmare. My heart is with her family and with the Barnard community.

actually, it is pretty quiet near that park. It doesn't surprise me that no one would pass for a while.

Teach them basic awareness & street smarts. I wouldn't walk through Morningside Park alone at any time of the day, TBH. Although the area around Columbia is tremendously safer than it used to be, it's still not safe to walk through that park alone, because it's not very busy -- basically, the perfect spot for armed robbers to hang out. That's why she wasn't found for 30 minutes, even in the early evening.

(Just to add - I know the exact stairs she was walking down. When I was at Columbia in the early 2000s, I only walked down those steps 1 time alone before becoming totally creeped out and never doing it again. I think the new development around Columbia probably makes it all seem much safer than it is.)

+1 It is very, very quiet near that park. It is a lovely piece of property, but historically not a safe place.

May her memory be a blessing.

Do we put monitored security cameras on public streets and public locations?

Tragic. So senseless. My heart goes out to her family. Also, Columbia ED being released this evening and Barnard tomorrow

So sad. I graduated from Barnard in 98. I thought the area had gotten a lot more safe since then. You can't ever let your guard down. I don;t know the details in this case, but I always see runners with ear buds. It's so important to be aware of surroundings. My condolences to the family.

Tragic. I've been trying to tell my DC to be aware, not walk alone in the darkness and give up whatever is being demanded if mugged.. but who knows what really happened there, she might have been given them the phone and still ended up dead.
I just can't.

Poor girl. This is so awful. I went to grad school at Columbia 20 years ago and walked through the park and up that stairway on my first day. I felt very unsafe and never went that way again. I am so sorry for her and her family.

Cameras don’t save lives ,they just help solve crimes after the fact.

People don’t think about things like this when they’re sending their kids off to great schools like Columbia, Barnard, Fordham, Hopkins, od Catholic.
My dd’s boyfriend grew up in the Bronx. Even the locals don’t go out alone in many areas. Especially around Harlem and the Bronx.

"Three to four men tried to rob her and then ended up stabbing her several times."

seriously what is wrong with these men???? Where did their parents both mother and father, teachers counselors, clergy, neighbors community fail bees criminal men?

So glad my child did not want to attend an urban school.

They are learning how to take care of themselves for the first time, and that is safer in a forgiving environment.

(Yes, bad things can happen anywhere, but crime us not equally likely everywhere)
