If he is September and your cut-off is in September, he is still in his calendar year with other kids who started at 4 and 5.
It doesn't sound like redshirting is an issue at all in your district so he is just young for his grade. It doesn't sound like 7 year olds in your Kinder classes were an issue. |
I'm just quoting someone else in the same district as me. It's just facts that 27% of kids are being redshirted in our district. You're not making any sense. First you said your kid started at 4 and then you said they would be forced to start at 6. 5 is the age kids should generally be starting Kinder. What is your children's bday and what is the cut off date? It sounds like they went on time according to the schedule and were just young for their grade. |
| Sep birthday. Cutoff was Sep 1st. DC went on time. Other than being the tallest, DC seems fine even if oldest in class. I think it bothers me more that DC is almost a year older than some classmates who turned 6 only in May and June and will turning 6 in July. I regret that DC lost a whole year because of the cutoff. |
September is a great birthday in our district. It falls in the middle since so many people redshirt. Anyone who redshirted from Feb - August would be 7-1 month older than your son so he would fall in about the middle range but if you are in a district where it is uncommon to reshirt he would be the oldest. I don't see it as being a negative. He didn't lose a year because he went on time. |
IME about half the ones who played before 8. Maybe 2/3. |
Not the ones I know. I know only a handful. Some do it because they like it and others it was the parent choice. Absolutely not 2/3. |
| August birthday boy. On time. The only problem is planning summer birthday parties, some years we had a hit, this year, no one is around. Not even one!! |
| sent my september on time. may won't be close to the youngest. this post is probably a troll. |
We have an early Sept. bday sent on time, doing great in an immersion elementary school (and the earlier the better for second language acquisition). We solved the bday problem by having her party in late Sept. or even October. Kid doesn’t care, so long as she has one, so it works out. |
We have a September kid and also wait on parties till later. |
Feb through Augst holdbacks for a Sept 1 cutoff?? That's pathetic. If the parents cared so much they should have made sure their kids had Jan (travel sports are calendar year) or Fall births. So sick of this. Wish schools would make FIRM 12-15 month intake years. |
| I think it just goes to show how many regional variations there are. Around here, it’s rare to redshirt the Spring birthdays in public school (I know private is a little different and they tend to have earlier “unofficial cutoffs.”) But sometimes I see articles about redshirting and people always comment about holding back their spring birthday kids. Not sure what I’d do in OP’s situation, probably would send my kid assuming that there would be some others who would also send on time, but I’d be questioning it too. |
We have a late June b-day (sent on time and thriving btw) and we do do birthdays before school ends (2 weeks early) since most people are on vacation the last two weeks of June. |
| We're in McLean, land of redshirting in this area and my DD has a late May birthday. We went to several boy's 6th birthdays in May and June. |
What grade is your dd? |
