What in tarnation?! |
I’d rather smell like outside than smell like bitch. |
If you have oily skin, it's from the sun oxidizing the oils and lipids. Hence the rancid or dirty smell |
I love when this thread comes around. I never understood what OP was talking about but my kids both get this sort of wet dog/ strong coppery smell that follows them inside during this time of year, I've been told its something to do with pollen and ozone? Who knows but they don't have to be sweaty to get the stink, but that does make it worse. |
I agree, I especially notice the odor when my grandkids go outdoors for a while, honestly I thought it was pollution. I never remember it as a child myself. |
Huh? |
Ok, do you all ever have a glass of water next to an open window in the summer? And then when you drink it, it smells off? I relate that to the weird outdoors smell on bodies. I don’t know if they are actually related but it would make sense. |
I'm from midwestern canada and i can smell it... it's not sweat. I think sweat makes the smell stronger though - maybe dampness allows the odor molecules to better bond/stick to you? whenever i go outside with wet hair even momentarily my hair picks up the smell of "outside", and replaces the fresh shampoo scent ![]() I've been walking a lot in winter, and when I come home I smell like ozone and "outside". I've tried reapplying deodorant but to no avail. maybe it's our body chemistry, maybe our olfactory neurons. |
I found this thread fascinating.
I avoid outdoor activities unless right before a shower because my clothes, skin, hair all smell like "outside" (the coppery, metallic, dirt, earthy smell). It is very strong and unpleasant. All 5 in our household get this on our bodies and can smell it on others. If I hang an outside jacket on a chair, it smells for DAYS until I finally give up and wash it. So, it's either ON the clothes/hair and I can smell it and others can't... or it's in my nose??? What in the world? What I want to know is: are there some places that this doesn't happen to people who can actually smell it? We went to Florida recently and did not notice this. Clothes smelled like we had been outside, but they did not give off the same PUNGENT outside smell we get here in North Carolina. My adult daughters won't go out if they can avoid it b/c it is really unpleasant. So...anyone ever noticed this NOT happening in one geographical area and happening in others? |
I know what you mean OP! My 6 YO smells like outside every time he comes in from playing. It's disgusting, he's a little kid, doesn't sweat, how is it even possible? |
huh? |
semen? |
We would get this smell before we moved here from Europe, but only if we'd been outside running errands (on foot) the whole day. Here just getting out to grab the mail gives me the smell. very weird. |
One day this should be picked up by a researcher so we can have closure! When I was going into a work building I'd spritz myself with fresh smelling spray after arriving on a humid day. |
I lived with a guy in DC who complained about this nonstop; super annoying. I would walk home from work (literally I’d walk ~12 blocks down 17th, office to home) or the gym — anywhere — and he’d complain about the “outside” smell. Not just on me, but on everyone. It drove me batty. He worked from home, never had windows open, and drove everywhere.
I love the smell of “outside”. I love when my kid smells like he’s been having a blast in the hot sun, when my backpack slightly reeks like the river I crossed on foot, when my dogs smell like snow, etc. I mean, I wash things so they don’t get nasty and stink forever, but it’s just our world — not dog poop. If I lived by a factory it would surely be a different story. There was a paper factory in my university town; that was beyond horrid. |
