How do you go outside... and not smell like outside?

It must be a genetic thing you either notice or don't. Because it's everywhere. The meadows of France, Rome, DC, Arizona, anywhere you're outside and it's warm. YOU probably have this musty "outside" smell, but don't notice it on yourself. Others sense and immediately know if you've been outside. And it doesn't have to do with sweating or exercising outside - just lingering!

"Outside" does not smell "musty"! "Musty" is the opposite of fresh: how can wind and open air and green things be a "musty" smell?

Again, I don't know how to explain this to you - it's gotta be like asparagus pee. Some people smell it, others don't. I LOVE being outside. I love nature. I love having the windows open. This is different. Maybe it's the way someone's pheromones react when in contact with sun, air, dirt, dust, pollens, etc. It's not a nice smell. Bless you, that you don't detect this on yourself and others. But google it - it's a very common phenomenon. I just want to know how to minimize it without being a bubble woman or never going outside.

I simply plan my outdoor time strategically. This would be different for different people.
For me, I have a toddler and can only shower when he’s sleeping. I’m somewhat willing to do a quick hop in, but he’s getting REAL climby, and the two brothers fight and fight sometimes.

So. For me I have to do outside just before his nap, or go outdoors in the a.m. before dh leaves for work.

Or on other days, if I have zero indoor plans with friends, I’m fine to have the outdoor odor remain on me.

And additionally I can hang out outside before/after dh gets home. Because I can be in the shower while he supervises kids. If I have evening plans, that’s a must. But if the evening plans are date night like immediately after he gets home, I will tell the kids we can’t play outside “mommy’s getting ready.”

I can smell it too OP. It’s earthy-smelling. I also smell sunburns.

I can definitely smell cold. And when rain is coming.

Rain smells amaaaaazing. Wish i could bottle it.
Until 20m later when it starts to smell like wormy fishy air. I think it’s caused by the worms coming up to flee the wet ground?

I used to have to cross a blacktop to get to school, and it was absolutely covered with worms that I had to step on, immediately before walking into school for the day

This stuff is so interesting to me! I don't know if I can smell rain before it comes - but I can smell snow before it starts falling - one of my favorite smells! Fresh rain is also refreshing. Both of these are different than an "outside" smell in warm weather that makes me feel like I need a shower.

What does cold smell like to you?

Interesting, I hesitated to even post about the rain coming smell, because I thought very one would think, "Duh, we all can do that." ?

Cold. . .the best way I can describe it is the smell on your kids' snow pants etc when they come in from playing in the snow?

Yea, these are all different from the "outside" smell OP was referring to.

My mom used to call it “doggy odor”. I know the smell you mean. It’s not NO, but a distinct smell. I smell it on my kids sometimes after shooting hoops in the driveway on a warm day.

Meant “BO” not “NO”.

It's definitely not BO or sweat.

I can go to the gym, work out pretty hard for 90 minutes, and not smell at all (nor should anyone if you're wearing clean clothes/deodorant). But 5-10min slow stroll outside on a warm day? Instant outdoorsy smell that is relatively pungent.

I can’t believe someone posted about this! I notice it on myself and don’t like it. I hate that it makes my hair smell

...and then the smell stays in my hair until I wash it. Yuk

I think it's more like a damp smell. I notice it on my kids and me too, even if there was no sweating. I used to live in CA, and never had this issue until I moved to the DC area. I think it must be the humidity.

Another who knows the smell and dislikes it. And it’s not sweat or BO. I smell it on my hair and definitely smell it on others.
