The Serena cartoon — too much, too far?

Everyone saw who the temper-tantrum boys were. No secret there. Sportscasters always called them out.

Let's just be honest here.

Good riddance. Maybe their replacements will be more fair and balanced

Billie Jean King, a tennis legend and equal rights advocate tweeted...
"When a woman is emotional, she's "hysterical" and she's penalized for it. When a man does the same, he's "outspoken" & and there are no repercussions. Thank you, Serena Williams, for calling out this double standard. More voices are needed to do the same"

Anybody agree?

I will admit I have said worse and not gotten penalized. And I’ve also been given a “soft warning” by the ump where they tell you knock it off or I will have to give you a violation. He should have at least given her that courtesy. Sad to mar a well played final that way.

I’ve regrettably said worse and I’ve never gotten a game penalty

Disagree
People hated McEnroe, but maybe you all are too young to know about him.

I’m not, and I’ve been watching tennis for decades. I don’t recall any of McEnroe's opponents awarded an entire game. Humor me, and prove me wrong.

Serena owes every single spectator of tennis a big apology. There is nothing wrong with her message it was her delivery. She looked like an adult brat.

Do you feel the same way about all the men that do the exact same thing and worse?

If so, why are you not posting you disgust for their actions?

Of course not. pP and so many women think that women should always be in the apologetic mode.

+1.

There's millions more offensive cartoons about Jesus, Mohammad, Obama, Trump, the Pope..

Seriously. People that are offended by this cartoon should join the Taliban.....imbeciles.

They are already the Taliban...

The progressive Taliban of course...

Actually YES I have been outspoken about the obnoxious men who have done the same, it is appalling. However I honestly do not ever remember seeing any one man go on and on and on as she did. She was like a dog with a bone that simply would not let go.

Once, twice I would have been OK with "getting" that she was just furious with herself for being showed up like that with the star power that she has and the perhaps unfair expectations thrust upon her. However to see it go on 3, 4 5 times I lost count was inexcusable. Message or no message she was incredibly wrong and her emotions got the best of her in the most unflattering light imaginable. She shed a very unappealing light on tennis, sportsmanship and in fact women that day. Shame on her for taking away the ultimate thrill for the young Osaka. I think she owes a public apology.

If you’ve never seen a male tennis player get this upset, you haven’t been watching tennis. Perhaps you just subconsciously made an excuse for them; thus paying little heed to their outbursts and throwing of racquets

Yes very racist. Exaggerated Serena’s black features (lips, nose, hair) and then made Osaka, who is also half-Haitian btw, to be the polar opposite (thin, blonde, white skinned). Anyone who does not see racism does not know history of cartoons.

OMG, I didn't even realize that. I had to go back and look at the cartoon again and you're right - the two tennis players have the same color skin in the drawing. It's weird that I (and a lot of others) are "seeing" white skin on the blonde tennis player and dark skin on the Serena player yet they are the same shade. Those calling this racist: what are your thoughts on that?

No they are not. “Serena” has dark brown shading all over her. The other tennis player does not

Yes, the "Serena" character clearly has darker brown shading all over, while the "Osaka" character has no dark brown shading and has very straight, very blond hair.

And strange that the chair umpire in the cartoon is asking the Osaka character to "let" Serena win, when the umpire actually awarded an extra point and then a whole game to Osaka. If you saw that cartoon without having seen the match, you might have thought the umpire had been unfairly favoring Osaka over Serena, when nothing could be further from the truth.

Some people are so racist that it actually affects their eyesight.

Anonymous wrote:Cartoons are caricatures. And Serena Williams is a very masculine looking woman and she threw a tantrum when she was called out on getting coaching from her coach. The coach should also have been fined. He has admitted to coaching from the sidelines.

I also did not think that this cartoon overplayed the "angry black woman" theme. Why? Because Serena was at that moment an angry spoilt brat. She is entitled to be human. She is also entitled to be fined.

I did not find it racist at all.

However, I am shocked by the fact that Osaka was depicted as a White woman. This single thing, IMHO, showed the implicit bias of the cartoonist.

I did not object to Serena being shown as masculine (she is - people have eyes), but I completely objected to Osaka (Hawaiian and Japanese, with very dark skin) - being shown as a meek, subservient, White woman who was being told by a paternalistic man sitting way above her to just let Serena win - absolutely misogynistic and racist. I found it insulting to women of all colors including White woman.

Serena was not dissed. All women and Osaka were.

So the white woman being presented as meek and subservient bothered you but the black woman being portrayed as animalistic was A-OK?

Not racist.

Maybe sexist.

All hail to the magical land of Queen Serena, where every opponent is to be screamed at, every referee who rules against her is a thief, and every linesperson who sees a foot fault deserves a fuc*ing ball rammed down her throat.

Nothing unusual here, folks. Just move along and keep paying the big crybaby her millions.

EVERY opponent?

EVERY referee?

EVERY linesperson?

Is that reality, PP? If you think so, you need your eyes checked.

Or perhaps you need to tone down your racist rhetoric.

You should be ashamed of yourself for posting that.

Everybody is racist. The end.

Well, most people certainly have a preference for their own. Human nature.
