And oh BTW Serena never brought race into this incident, but everyone else is.

Remove one word and you pretty much have my opinion on the subject.

But think about the history of these types of images. I think its easy for people to individualize this cartoon to just Serena but when I look at it, it condemns all black women as angry black women. Folks should really go over to the African American Museum they explain really well the impact and purpose of these types of images. The history of watermelon and black people is a really great example.

I'm really not trying to exacerbate the debate here but I wish people would take a second to try and find information that refutes their beliefs. It's too easy of an out to just say this cartoon depicts what happened. It's much more damaging in my opinion.

Then boycott this artist. Seriously. This cartoon is a result of what happened on that court, it is not the reason for Serena's meltdown.

I don't care about what happened on the court. The way that image is depicted is racist. PERIOD. It's reminiscent of cartoonish characters from the Jim Crow era. Sorry you folks need to read up on history. This sh*t is damaging to people and all of you defending it should be ashamed of yourselves.

yeah, racist, too much and not necessary. It could easily fit right in with these older images:

This video popped up in my YouTube recommended video feed (not sure why) but it was interesting to watch Serena's outbursts again. She really got out of control and was clearly trying to intimidate the chair ump.

I felt that the cartoon was sexist and paternalistic. But isn't women sport the same everywhere - a poorer cousin of male sports?

However, I do not think Serena was portrayed incorrectly in a cartoon. In fact this was the most recognizable cartoon of her that I have seen. Don't believe it - google "serena williams cartoons" and you will see what I mean.

This was a caricature, not a portrait. And it was a damn good caricature that was immediately recognizable. She is an extremely masculine and a big black woman. She dresses also in her own style. All of that was capture well in the cartoon. It was a very good drawing.

Serena messed up the sweet moment of victory for another, younger, colored woman. And that was the real tragedy. I expected better from her.

From reading your post, it is easy to understand how you would miss the racism in that cartoon.

A- You're a racist with a skewed perception of AA women's bodies.
B- Many female tennis players are straight up and down. I've seen a few pros and IRL most are super skinny with toned calves and arms. Serena is 5'9"/155 lbs (give or take some pregnancy pounds) which puts her at a size 8 or 10. She's hardly in the running for Ms. Olympia.
C- This is the same referee that Nadal banished from ever presiding over his matches because of the issues he has with him.

There it is. You mean she is not a ironing board, broom stick, white woman; therefore it’s okay to revert back to age old sambo looking caricatures to depict her. Got it.

Lol! Ladies and gentleman, we have a relic from the 1950s here, using loaded racist terminology and all!
