All of our friends are leaving DC

The real DC community is focused around old DC money - no one new ever breaks into that. Otherwise it's a patchwork of people outside what they feel their real communities are. This is part of the reason ever bar in DC is effectively an out of town sports bar for some team or other.

This is simply not true. DC native here. It used to be Chocolate City, and there's still a wonderful warmth here that is not dependent on money.

Sad way to look at life. You can go to any city in the world, define some elite, and cry they are the “real” city and you are not invited to their parties.

City belongs to all; city belongs to none. You make your own party in this life.

It’s especially pathetic given how little “old money” exists in this government town that has no real tradition of entrepreneurship.

+1

Exactly this.

Yeah, maybe graham family and their circle? Or this is a young person who thinks Steve case has old money.

Lots of middle class families 30 years ago cashed out their houses and galavant around proclaiming old money status. Old money in DC is a joke, the whole place runs on the government pulling money out of the 48 other states and giving and unfairnshare back to the DC Metro and then pulling doe eyed dongoodersa and power player wannabes into the meat grinder that is politics. Or in other words, always new money and usually someone else’s money.

Nailed it.

No, they didn't "nail it". Do you live here? Most people here DO NOT work for the government or in politics. Geez.

Yes, I live here. The federal workforce and contractors are huge. Most of this town is an huge job corps program for the talentless UMC.

It was pretty much mostly feds, with a few lawyers and lobbyists thrown in, until about 20 years ago; when it became over saturated because everyone thought one profession would be a great idea.

Are you talking about DC or the region? DC is not made up of "feds". Where do you get that? I live in DC. I work for a nonprofit. My neighbors are professors, business people, lawyers, etc.

Is this a joke?

1 piece of information = annedote

2+ pieces of information = data

Consulting companies that work on government = government jobs
Hotels employees that work in hotels that exist because 40% of the work force is fed or fed contractor or consultant = government jobs
Layers that have jobs in DC in relation to supporting clients around the government = government jobs
....this is a company town, despite how hard people try to pretend it is something more...

So wish them well. They won’t be back. Just like my friends who went to Minneapolis and have a boat on a lake. Or deep philly suburbs where their neighbors are super friendly and there are way better food options.

Even better, here's a calculator for comparison:

Your neighborhood maybe. We Beltway bandits have been here for decades. Metrorail-related development has changed the inner suburbs though, made living close in desirable.

DC has been two towns for decades

The only difference now is that gentrification is moving faster than ever and most of the non poor EOTR black communities are being overrun by white people
