All of our friends are leaving DC

The real DC community is focused around old DC money - no one new ever breaks into that. Otherwise it's a patchwork of people outside what they feel their real communities are. This is part of the reason ever bar in DC is effectively an out of town sports bar for some team or other.

This is simply not true. DC native here. It used to be Chocolate City, and there's still a wonderful warmth here that is not dependent on money.

Sad way to look at life. You can go to any city in the world, define some elite, and cry they are the “real” city and you are not invited to their parties.

City belongs to all; city belongs to none. You make your own party in this life.

It’s especially pathetic given how little “old money” exists in this government town that has no real tradition of entrepreneurship.

Yeah, maybe graham family and their circle? Or this is a young person who thinks Steve case has old money.

Lots of middle class families 30 years ago cashed out their houses and galavant around proclaiming old money status. Old money in DC is a joke, the whole place runs on the government pulling money out of the 48 other states and giving and unfairnshare back to the DC Metro and then pulling doe eyed dongoodersa and power player wannabes into the meat grinder that is politics. Or in other words, always new money and usually someone else’s money.

No, they didn't "nail it". Do you live here? Most people here DO NOT work for the government or in politics. Geez.

OP, I don't blame them for moving. I made the mistake of moving to D.C. and it was a nightmare. I thank G-d every day for the moment our house sold and we got out of there. Bars on the windows, people talking loudly outside your window at all times of night, hearing gunshots at night (playing "was that a gun shot or fireworks" game every 4th of July, hearing about young men dying over a pair of shoes or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, finding panties discarded in our back yard (shudder), seeing trans women prostitutes riding bikes down the street, having people use our trash cans as toilets, poorly managed by city "leaders" (using that word real loosely). I could go on but you get the picture. It takes a real liberal to live in DC and come out the other side still a liberal. The town embodies everything that can go wrong with liberal policies.

Ps: the restaurants aren't all that great. And people who send their kids to public schools (or even charters) are nuts. No thank you. I love NOVA and everything about it. D.C. has turned me off from ever living in a city again.

Um no. Red states are the bIGGEST takers from the Feds. and I assure you that DC generates more in taxes than quite a few other states. Youguys need to get out more. No one cares about "old money" and I only know a tiny handful of govt workers. I know lots of tech, non profit and international development people. Lived here 20 years and no plans to move back to my small town in the south.

There must be a reason all of your friends are leaving DC. Wait. They all have one thing in common ... you. What are you doing to drive them away?

We find contentment in our 4-person family. We stay open to friendship opportunities but they are secondary.

LOL. Considering one could easily buy a house in Langley for about low 200k thirty years ago, hope they are not bragging too much.

It was pretty much mostly feds, with a few lawyers and lobbyists thrown in, until about 20 years ago; when it became over saturated because everyone thought one profession would be a great idea.
