Why are HRCS so popular? Test scores stink.

I started this thread, not to pit charter and DCPS but because there seems to be a double standard when it comes to not so stellar test scores from DCPS Title I schools. Take JO Wilson as an example, only because I saw some recent no-so-flattering comments about the school. The test scores are on par with some of these charters. 24% ELA and 35% math. Yet, when someone wanted feedback about the school, everyone jumped on the poster saying it was a terrible school and never to enroll their child there. Why? It seems to have some pretty good programs too. It's not just JO Wilson but you can plug in a lot of DCPS Title I schools that are doing just as well, if not better than these HRCS like Marie Reed, Barnard, Thomson. Yet, when anyone suggests enrolling their child at one of these schools, you get the most negative feedback. Why? And why are the waitlists for these other schools into the hundreds?

Are you new to DC or just an idiot? You can't start a post like this and not expect it to be an us vs them war. People like you are the problem with education in the city. If you want to help, educate about the pros of your school, don't shit on the cons of others.

In what world would a loving parent choose JO Wilson, Marie Reed, Barnard, or Thomson over schools like Two Rivers, Cap City, LAMB, and Yu Ying?

Uh, YuYing's ELA scores stink. Their white kids scores in the 50s, vs. in the 80s at most of the DCPS with enough white kids to pull out by subgroup (more than 25). Their ELA scores are even worse that IT's, called "poor" on this thread. Your basis for comparison isn't useful. How about JO Wilson vs. Maury, Barnard vs. Ross, Thomson vs. Janney.

Actually only the 3rd grade ELA scores stink - which does bring down the school wide average. Sort of like Janney this past year.

4th and 5th are in the mid to high 60s

Haven't they spent only half the amount of time in English as all the other children their age? Mandarin and English don't even share an alphabet. The cognitive benefits of a second language have been well established, however it takes until approximately 5th grade for some of that to begin to show up on standardized tests.

True but it's same situation for children from the Spanish immersion schools and you don't see the same 3rd grade dip. Then again - Janney.

One year doesn't mean very much. Gotta watch year over year.

That link gives me an error message. Further, anything from the charter board's website lacks credibility--one of their unstated goals is to justify their existence. FYI--this doesn't affect me directly either way. My children attend our well resourced Ward 3 IB school with some of the highest test scores in the city. I'm just interested in unbiased information.

Why do you have such a hard-on for Yu Ying? I looked them up because you've mentioned them twice. Looks like they had the bad third-grade year as well:

Grade 3: 31/46
Grade 4: 69/68
Grade 5: 69/73

And by race, the top performers are not the white kids, they're the two or more race kids: 71/78. White: 59/74.

NP--YY's scores are unimpressive. Especially for a school with such a low poverty rate.

That is so awful of you. You could not be more judgmental and hateful. Parents have all sorts of reasons for choosing schools, such as better commute which translates into increased quality of life and more opportunity to spend time with their children outside of a car. To imply that parents don't love their kids because they are not in a top charter school is shameful.

I want my bright child challenged and lifted by a room full of smart kids. Sadly, it looks like I've been kidding myself about ITS.

You assume that your "bright child" is not being enriched based on test scores? You picked the wrong school if that's the metric you care about.

How does she know her kid isn't the dumb kid bringing the scores down.

Ha! She seems rather adamant that her kid nailed the PARCC.

Sadly, I guess the same world that lets you raise children up to be utter sociopaths?

Oh my god. If this doesn't take the cake.

I read this 3 times because I thought I had to have read it wrong.

Well resourced mom is exactly why we don't live in Ward 3. I do not want my children around people like that.

All of those scores are unimpressive. What are the FARMS rates for each of those schools? I'm almost certain that YY's has the lowest rate by far.
