Desperate for a good book. Seriously.

Just clicked on this because of the subject and then I realized this was my post from TWO YEARS AGO! who resurrected this?!

In the past 2 years I have liked:
Little Fires Everywhere
Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine (although this one was almost too upsetting)
Man Called Ove

And a few more I’ll have to look up!

I could ot get through Fates And Furies

The second half flips all your preconceptions about the characters. You need to make it to that part.

+1

I'm not afraid to give up on books halfway through, but I'm glad I stuck with this one.

This meets none of OP’s qualifications, but I’m loving The Overstory. If anyone else is looking for a powerful read...

So good.

OP, I have similar taste in books. You should read Little Fires Everywhere.

Anybody read The Perfect Couple by Elin Hildebrand yet? I loved it. My other favorite by her is The Blue Bistro, but seriously all her books are good.

This is my favorite of hers too! I also like Beautiful Day, A Summer Affair, and The Beach Club.

This is a great book that I rarely see mentioned on these kinds of lists.

Speaking of Curtis Sittenfeld, I'm reading Sisterland right now and loving it. It's really good.

I just read The Outsiders for the first time--somehow I missed that one while in school--and while it does not fit the OP's criteria for no violence, it was a quick but thought-provoking read. Currently, I am about 2/3 through Francisco Cantu's The Line Becomes A River. Again, not fitting OP's criteria, but I highly recommend it in the midst of our current political climate.

Have you read any Bill Bryson? A Walk in the Woods is a classic humor read.

This is Where I Leave You, Jonathon Tropper

My standard recommendation: "Little, Big" by John Crowley. Beautifully written fantasy
