Well educated, professional DC women know that they shouldn't care how much he spent or how big the rock is. They know that such things are not correlated with long term happiness in a relationship.

However, in the back of their mind it absolutely does matter. It stings a bit if their expectations are not met.

Gents: find out what your lady's expectations are w/r/t the size of the ring. If you have someone whose expectations are way beyond your budget or tastes, you're in for a world of pain once you're married.
