Okay, so where is DS/DD going to go to college next fall?

My daughter will be taking a gap year. She'll work, take some classes related to a serious hobby, and do a little traveling.

So glad to see that so many on this thread have kids who are leaving the east coast for college.

?? what's wrong with the east coast?

Nothing. I just like seeing kids who want to explore other areas of the country and abroad.

Yes, Evanston is extremely different from a DC suburb.

It may not look it, but the Midwestern mentality if completely different -- from someone who has lived in both places.

Yes, but this is a semi-rich Chicago suburb. Peoria it ain't.

Never said it was. But the difference between Chicago/Evanston and DC/McLean is huge. I grew up in one and now live in the other. The East Coast and Midwest are two different mentalities.

Why not? My sibling and three of my friends graduated from Oxy. Everyone called it that back in the day....

Let me count the ways....

OK, I can't count them all. The Midwest moves at a different pace than the East Cost. Not better or worse, just different, slower, more relaxed, in some ways. It's just as petty and awful as the East Coast in many ways too, but if you prefer the East Cost vibe and pace, you won't be happy in the Midwest. It's all about personal preference. Northwestern is a great school, and Evanston is a nice town. It's not anything like McLean or any of the DC suburbs. You just have to experience it to understand. I've lived in the Midwest, and I know I prefer the East Cost. There's lots to love in the Midwest, but it's not for me.

Fantastic!!! Such an amazing university in possibly the best city in the world! If I could do it all over again - that is where I would go!

Congratulations to your DC!

I am jealous - and I went to college 20 years ago - now if my child wants to go there - [sigh] such a long, long way away! But, oh, what a beautiful city and school. Congrats!

Nice to have such a great school in-state!

We are very, very lucky. We also have Berkeley and UC Santa Barbara. And this think called California Regents scholarships (full academic merit scholarships) that DS was given as well. We are beyond thrilled and so proud of DS.

Just curious - why are you on DCUM?

I am from the Chicago area and had a lot of friends go to Marquette - they all loved it!

I agree it is a great choice for a DC area kid.

Ha thanks for the reassurance. I just thought it was funny how it combined some of the things often looked down on on this site - Catholic, not Ivy or anywhere near equivalent, and in the dreaded flyover part of the country. All kidding aside, he loved the campus, loves the idea of going somewhere a little different for college, and they had the direct admit physical therapy program he wanted. So yup, I agree it's a good choice for him!

There are some ridiculous posters on DCUM who look down on anything that's not HPY, Stanford or MIT (Columbia & Brown might be acceptable to them, too ). Don't mind them -- Marquette is a very good school that the majority of students could only dream of being admitted to & it sounds like it's the perfect fit for him! Congratulations to your son!

Marquette is solid school and Milwaukee seems like it would be a fun city for a college student.

DD is currently waitlisted at Davidson & will go there if eventually admitted. If not, she's headed to Vassar.

What attracted your DD to Barnard and not Columbia?

I'm not saying this was a factor for the PP's DD -- it sounds like it wasn't-- but it is, generally speaking, much more difficult to be admitted to Columbia. I've known several kids who've applied to Barnard over Columbia for that reason (and a few who just liked Barnard better!).

I'll post where my kids are. One at University of North Florida. One at Ole Miss. One at University of Florida. Very proud of all of them.

My student at University of North Florida is on a full academic scholarship. Everything is covered - tuition, fees, dorms, books.... She just got accepted to a really neat Masters Program. She'll be teaching English in China for two years. They are paying for her Masters Degree, paying her a salary, and paying all of her living expenses. She's a special ed major who wants to get her masters in speech path.

My kid at Ole Miss is a political science major. He's on an ROTC Scholarship.

My University of Florida student is pre-med. He has a partial academic scholarship. The rest is covered by Bright Futures.

Super proud of all three of them! It's costing us almost nothing. They'll graduate with no student loan debt. I'm just hoping the other two can follow that example. Not every kids cares about going to prestigious schools. For what it's worth, my daughter is a national merit scholar. She turned down Yale.
