Then you must have grown up in the city or a dense suburb. Idiot. |
That the driver can be the killer, that's what gnaws at me. DH and I felt that DD's Uber account added a layer of peace of mind (ours) and security (hers). I just can't stop thinking about this case and the Graham family. So sad. |
Definitely the most idiotic post of the year. What old lady is going to risk becoming a victim herself by triapsing through a rocky, heavilly wooded creek??? |
Maybe the police and search teams couldn't search the property because it is private property? I'm not blaming the neighbor - maybe they went over there and something gave them the creeps and they were scared to look any further. It just seems that if I lived close to something like that I would have brought a friend/neighbor back with me. But in the end, the outcome for Hannah did not change. So tragic. |
As a former UVA female student and recent Charlottesville resident, I can say that finding a cab at that hour isn't always the easiest. And I don't know if Uber is in Charlottesville or not, but when DH and I tried to Uber after a football game recently, nothing came up. There was a safe driver program operated by the police, but it definitely wasn't prevalent enough. I certainly made poor choices in terms of getting home at night; I knew it was stupid, but it was hard/expensive to find a cab (and at this point, I'd be scared witless now that I know who was operating them) and my friends weren't ready to leave the bar when I was. Charlottesville and the University really need to join forces to get a reliable, safe, ubiquitous transit service in place for students and make it a no-brainer for them to use. In addition, I'd suggest increasing police presence at certain locations and early morning hours. Charlottesville is a wonderful place, but I definitely wouldn't recommend walking around the city late at night. Downtown and surrounding areas are mostly shadier than not past 10 p.m. |
Does UVA have any sort of evening shuttle service? I went to U Penn which at the time was in a very dangerous part of Philadelphia and we never walked at night because the escort van (which operated until 3 AM) was so easy to catch. I'm surprised UVA doesn't have something similar. |
Welcome to the new Marxist dialogue |
Bingo. You get shot for trespassing in places like rural Virginia. |
I hope so. When I was at UVA (graduated 2002), I was unaware of a shuttle. But it makes a lot of sense for UVA to have a shuttle going between main grounds and the downtown mall. Friends of mine at the University of Chicago always took the UofC shuttle anywhere in Hyde Park at night. |
It is good advice - I gave it to my daughters when they first started going to parties in HS. And not picking on PP, but this is a talk parents should have with kids when they are in HS so that it is somewhat engrained by the time they get to college. TBH, even then it is 50/50 that your kids will heed the advice all of the time. Young adults will make shaky decisions - it actually is part of normal development. But you just hope that these decisions do not get them hurt or killed. |
If police wanted to search the property couldn't they have simply asked for permission to do so (as opposed to obtaining a search warrant)? But even then an owner might decline to allow a search out of fear that their property might be damaged or some other trouble might result for them. And if the owner was elderly she may have been suffering from her own health issues and not really aware of the search efforts - in her own world so to speak. |
I only hope that they didn't miss a window of opportunity for additional forensic evidence so they can nail this SOB. |
Albemarle is huge, 726 square miles, of which 95% is rural. And it's thick, dense, hilly, rocky, etc. Many properties are very difficult to maneuver. Not knowing the physical condition of the property owner, it's quite possible she couldn't search her property.
UberX JUST came to Charlottesville. UVa has run a night shuttle for a long time (it was here when I went to Virginia in the mid-90s) However, it took forever to arrive and students would rather just walk home then wait. UVa has recently beefed up this shuttle, so maybe it will get more use. |
+1 Virginia Tech has a Safe Ride service that will pick you up anywhere on campus, 24/7, and take you to your dorm or the off-campus math emporium. This is great for freshmen and my junior year roommate used it too since we lived within walking distance of the off-campus empo and downtown Blacksburg is right next to the edge of campus. And all the buses run until 2am on weekends. PLUS there is the Hooptie Ride service (I lived with a driver and a dispatcher my senior year) that is a private company but operates until 4am on weekends and 3am on weeknights. It's cheaper and more accessible than the few cabs in Blacksburg. I was never in a situation where I couldn't have taken either a bus, Hooptie, or Safe Ride home. |
I recall hearing a few weeks ago that he was questioned about MH but that they had nothing to hold him on. |
