As a former UVA female student and recent Charlottesville resident, I can say that finding a cab at that hour isn't always the easiest. And I don't know if Uber is in Charlottesville or not, but when DH and I tried to Uber after a football game recently, nothing came up. There was a safe driver program operated by the police, but it definitely wasn't prevalent enough. I certainly made poor choices in terms of getting home at night; I knew it was stupid, but it was hard/expensive to find a cab (and at this point, I'd be scared witless now that I know who was operating them) and my friends weren't ready to leave the bar when I was. Charlottesville and the University really need to join forces to get a reliable, safe, ubiquitous transit service in place for students and make it a no-brainer for them to use. In addition, I'd suggest increasing police presence at certain locations and early morning hours. Charlottesville is a wonderful place, but I definitely wouldn't recommend walking around the city late at night. Downtown and surrounding areas are mostly shadier than not past 10 p.m. [/quote]

Does UVA have any sort of evening shuttle service?  I went to U Penn which at the time was in a very dangerous part of Philadelphia and we never walked at night because the escort van (which operated until 3 AM) was so easy to catch. +1 Virginia Tech has a Safe Ride service that will pick you up anywhere on campus, 24/7, and take you to your dorm or the off-campus math emporium. This is great for freshmen and my junior year roommate used it too since we lived within walking distance of the off-campus empo and downtown Blacksburg is right next to the edge of campus. And all the buses run until 2am on weekends.

PLUS there is the Hooptie Ride service (I lived with a driver and a dispatcher my senior year) that is a private company but operates until 4am on weekends and 3am on weeknights. It's cheaper and more accessible than the few cabs in Blacksburg. I was never in a situation where I couldn't have taken either a bus, Hooptie, or Safe Ride home. [/quote]
