Downton 2/24

I don't like how the story moved at a snails pace for the entire season and then jumped ahead a few months in the last episode. Nothing interesting has happened. Recap:

-Mary has men at her feet. This is a recurring theme since Pamuk
-Edith is whiny and can't get a break
-Lord Grantham has his head up his arse
-Violet makes snarky comments about "class"
-Isobel and Tom both feel "out of place"
-Boringness from the kitchen staff
-Thomas feels the need to have all these inner circle details that never really amount to anything
-Someone died

Yawn. I want more to happen.

It's interesting to me that none of the staff seem to have children; or did I miss something? Were Mrs. Hughes or Mrs. Patmore ever married before? I assume so, since they're "Mrs.". But we never hear any of their backstory. Also, how old would you say Anna is supposed to be? Wouldn't you think she and Bates would want to start a family?

No, I like her character! She's a bit naive (situation with the jazz singer), but very sweet and seems fun.

+1. She's immature and can be silly, but she's a breath of fresh air in my opinion!

"Mrs." are honorary titles. Most people in service had to remain single. Being caught in any romantic situation would have been a reason to fire the female staff.

After it was over, I began thinking, "All of this back and forth to London, etc and I haven't seen or heard anything about the kids!"

Excellent synopsis, 20:10.

Mary's relationships move so glacially that I find it hard to believe that in a era where pretty much a generation of men died b/c of the war, single men couldn't find more than one woman to find intriguing and worth pursing/marrying. (Also, for the longest time, I kept thinking the pig-guy was Napier. I couldn't keep these guys straight.)

Also, regarding the entail, I thought there was some letter discovered among Matthew's things that gave a strategy to fight it, so I can't remember now, but isn't Mary the heir of Downton now?

I love the idea that Edith is Rosamund's daughter! That is perfect. Oh, I do hope it turns out that way!

I'm not crazy about the godfather, I much prefer the doctor for Isobel. I almost think she's too comfortable with him, though. The new guy gets under her skin, and I don't think she had decided whether she loves it or hates it.

I didn't like Rose at first, but she's growing on me. The complete infatuation with one man after another is silly - how old is she supposed to be? For claiming that the musician was the love of her life, she seems to have gotten over him pretty quickly.

Re: Mrs Hughes... a couple of seasons ago, there was an episode where an old flame came back and proposed. As I recall, he had proposed earlier in life, and she had turned him down. So no, I don't think she has ever been married. She and Carson are so sweet together... But they are such good friends that I almost hate to "ruin" their platonic relationship with a romantic one. I think their relationship is perfect just how it is.

Hate the teacher for Tom. What a pushy, nosy, busybody. He needs somebody respectable who can fit into the Downton life (because I will be seriously pissed if they take him off the show), but not a snob. Sybil really was perfect for him . I miss her.

I'm glad Ivy is leaving, she was getting annoying. I actually like Daisy, I think she's very sweet and I don't find her accent annoying at all.

Anonymous wrote:Can we talk about the scene where Edith's aunt says something like she's been in Edith's situation before? There was eluded to a week or two ago, and now it was more forthright.

So…which Cora/Lord G daughter is really the aunt's daughter? Think Edith is really the aunt's daughter?

Or do you think the aunt just has some kid out there same as Edith?

Interesting - especially since she looks different (lighter hair, less delicate features) than Cora and the other two girls.

But isn't the aunt a widow? That was referenced at one point. Why would she need to give her baby to her brother? Unless she got married later in life, I guess.

Is she a widow? I just assumed she had never married. But either way, I wonder why she didn't remarry or marry later in life? She's a very attractive woman and I'm sure she has some money. I did get the impression that she had either had a baby long ago, or perhaps an abortion.

The best way to manage your own money was to be a widow. To re-marry would mean losing her independence

I like Rose. Remember she has had limited education and is being groomed only to snag a rich husband. But she is game for anything.

It has not much to do with education. Rose is young and free. As Mary said, she's a flapper accept it

I like the idea that Edith is Aunt Rosamund's daughter, but if that's true I would wonder why she was so against Edith making the same choice that Aunt Rosamund herself did.

Mary's godfather seems nice enough, but some one should clue him in that you don't romance a woman by complaining what a drudge your late wife was. Seriously, I think he's brought her up every time he's talked with Isobel. Give it a rest already, Pops.

Seriously we have to get Bates to go "take care of" Mary's godfather and bring back Dr Clarkson for Isobel.

I am also disappointed that Mrs. Crawley and the Doctor did not get together. I am not crazy about the teacher for Tom. I do like Edith's storyline and I love the idea that she may be her aunt's daughter. Mary's storyline is okay..but I do get her suitors mixed up.

Mostly what this season lacked was a big juicy love story. I am not so sure about Mrs. Hughes and the head Butler...I can't believe I am forgetting his name. I am thinking he is not right for her. I love her and think maybe she deserves the handsome doctor.

I wish they let Daisy have a nice love story although I did like how she came to terms with her unrequited love story which is very common for young women to have to go through.

Now that is a pairing I hadn't even thought of! Mrs. Hughes and the doctor! I do like the idea of Isobel and the doctor, but the Mrs. Hughes angle is intriguing. However, I don't think those two have ever had any romantic interest in one another. And it's so obvious how Mrs. Hughes feels about Mr. Carson. I just wonder if he (Carson) is too uptight to ever return her affections!?

I never noticed that Mrs. Hughes was keen on Carson, but maybe so. I just always think of her as very proper and gentle and kind to everyone including Carson. Carson is not handsome enough for her! She is one of my favorites. I also like Isobel. Why oh why didn't Julian Fellowes at least let Isobel and the DR get together this season so we could have a little romance. I don't think there was one kiss the whole season!

Probably because Rosamund regrets her choice.
