| No. I rarely have my porch lights on. If someone is coming to my house at night when most people are sleeping they aren't trying to rob me and will get in with or without my porch light shining. |
Shoot them with a BB gun. People you are messing up all wildlife, irritating your neighbors and illuminating the way for robbers near your home. Stupid stupid stupid. |
Another dumbass statement. When we went 30k years without electricity we also did not have 4000 sq ft SF houses with front porches. Why does the fact that you are paranoid and sleep with a handgun be relevant in this conversation? So because she is a divorcee she does not have the right to feel safe and secure in her house? |
| Just get the motion sensors. No need to have your house lit up like a Christmas tree every night! If someone is going to break in they will break in regardless. Motion also is more effective because the sudden burst of light startles the intruder. |

Our neighbor installed outdoor lights that shone directly into several rooms in our house.
We asked him to angle the lights down a bit so they aren't aimed directly at us. He did. Everyone is happy. It wasn't hard. |

Our new neighbor has the flood lights pointed so that our bedroom is lit like there is a night light on - so we don't sleep well. I try to keep a eye mask on at night. We will likely have to buy darkening shades if they keep it on like this.
We have unscrewed the bulbs once or twice when they were gone on travel. Blessed sleep! |

It could be illegal. Check town rules. Low watts in front of house ok but the non motion detectors flood lamps are not allowed most towns.
Ironic you could be the criminal |
| I've seen and reported break-ins in broad daylight. Your always-on lights do nothing except blind people trying to ID criminals at night. The create darkspots outside the circle light of light for thieves to hide in and get away. Last year this is what happened when I spotted a drunken man lurking in my neighbor's front yard, and poking around there. You'd be better off with night vision type devices and cameras. |
| Turn off the damned lights and let your poor neighbors sleep. Good grief. Selfish assholes. |
| I think you can have lights and not point them at your neighbors, right? That’s the answer right? |
| W0w. I am surprised at all the people on this thread who are willing to annoy their neighbors, and believe they have a right to have a light that shines into their neighbor's space I think light is like noise, it should be contained in your space, your neighbor should not be expected to "just deal with it" Believe it or not, light is energy, and some people are disturbed by it even with curtains. Why the hell do you think you have a "right" to shine light all night into my home, and expect me to put up curtains, to deal with it?!?! |

NP I think there are one or two cranks who don't have a lot to do who are responding multiple times given the commonalities of some of the posts.
In any event, OP, ask any police department and they will tell you that having on outside lights help to prevent break-ins and deter other problems. In fact, they'll recommend outdoor lights before even suggesting a dog or a home security system. Lights that stay on continuously during the darkness are better than motion-sensor lights because small animals may set off the motion-sensor lights enough that you will discount them coming on. Whereas lights that stay on continuously during darkness make it very difficult for anyone to approach the house or primary points of egress or vulnerability. Your neighbors should have on their outdoor lights, too. Additionally, you might want to call the city or your jurisdiction to come out and do a light check. They'll come at night and evaluate if the street light coverage is sufficient or if you need additional lights put in. |

Can you also make the sun come up later on weekends - especially if they went to bed late?
I'm easily annoyed by everything so I try to prevent bothering anyone else. However, this is ridiculous. Truly selfish, lazy people. Blackout curtains are not that expensive and the lights protect them too. |
| We don't but would if there was crime in the neighborhood. Crime is key. Otherwise it's a waste. |
This thread was started in 2012. I’m sure it’s not an issue anymore. |
