Can we take the fact out that he was not proven to be mentally ill yet? I do not like the labeling of him being mentally ill as if only mentally ill people would do such a thing.

This is speculation of course, but wouldn't the fact that an atrocity is planned and pre-meditated in a secretive way (for fear of being caught) indicate that a person knew that what they were doing was wrong--or at the very least they knew society would not approve of their actions? That's enough of a grasp of reality for a person to be declared SANE IMO. Truly crazy people proclaim the thing they are planning and doing--their insane "system" of logic precludes them from even seeing it as wrong. Or so I thought...Maybe you can establish temporary insanity in some cases, but this doesn't remotely fit the bill.

Uh, white culture. In America white cultural frame of reference is dominant. Not saying that is good or bad but that it just is. White culture excuses such an act as mental illness when committed by a white person. I'm saying black culture presents mental illness very differently at times anyway, and that it is not acknowledged and treated as such.

For me it has nothing to do with him being white. It is the fact he was medical student working on a PhD - no indication of any past history of violence and claims from family/friends that he had been acting strangely.

If a back man had been in the same scenario and done the same thing I would feel the same way.

Completely different from someone black or white who is in a gang, has a long criminal past, has never been gainfully employed and has a traumatic violent past that has left him angry and aggressive.

People with mental illness are no more likely to be violent or aggressive to strangers than anyone else. however often when they commit violent acts it makes the news because of the unpredictability and incongruency of the act with the person.

Yes, but why did that young black man join a gang? What sort of mental illness was he suffering from to cause him to seek this type of acceptance and approval? Was he shunned by "the normal folks"? "Traumatic violent past"...that would cause some mental disorder, no? Perhaps PTSD?

I suspect schizoprenia also. There is nothing you can do with an adult unless there is evidence that the person intends harm to himself or others. It is very likely he never told anyone about his intentions.
