James Holmes has been called quite a few things on DCUM. Trayvon Martin was also called a variety of terms, including "young man":

You are cherry picking two terms out of many to make a point. But, I think you are actually illustrating that a large spectrum of viewpoints are available on DCUM. If that makes DCUM unique (I don't actually think it does), then it is something of which we should all be proud.

It's not the DCUM consensus, don't get overworked about it. It just takes one or a few posters saying these things and it's upsetting, but I don't think it's representative of what DCUMers think.

I do feel compassion for him, for Cho and even the kids from Columbine. it is important to focus on the victims, but it is also important to pay attention to the murderers and why they developed to be monsters. If we keep pointing our finger we won't solve the problem. this won't be the last case.

It is about race. If this guy were black, there would be a discussion about "why the black race is so effed up". Just look at the lululemon thread. That girl seemed deranged to me, but folks didn't feel the same and they certainly didn't feel sorry for her!

I really do get what you are saying here. FWIW, I am a white woman in my late 40's.

I have to admit that part of me feels sorry for him, sitting in the courtroom looking and acting nuts.

Surely his life will now be analyzed and we'll get clues into various opportunities people had to intervene and potentially change the course of his life (and thus save those he killed). One of the bigger questions is how to translate that to others at risk now. I'm sure this guy's teachers, neighbors, acquaintances and friends from his whole life will be wondering what they could have done differently. Not everyone who acts the way he did in hindsight will go on to do something so horrible, it's hard to say anyone could have predicted such a terrible end.

You don't have a PhD, do you? The first year (and beyond) is basically hazing and emotional abuse. I would never sign up for it again.

Sane people kill people all the time. This could all be an elaborate ploy to trick the system. This guy is smart...he just might get away with it. This asshole doesn't think he's the Joker...he wants you to think he does.

My guess? University of CO is going to be in DEEP sh*t.

Everyone is focused on the "he's crazy" and he will play it that way, but he got all of the chemicals via the university, the university failed him on his exams and, likely, did nothing. They probably didn't even refer him to a counselor or dean. It will be easy for his team to show that he was mentally abused by the university and the breaking point was failing the exams. The university did nothing to help him so he spiraled into madness and went on a shooting spree.

It's not going to be an easy conviction. And I think UofCO needs to be held liable and made example of to other universities that don't give a crap about grad students.

You definitely have a point, however, VA Tech seems to have gotten away with not referring Cho to counseling. How is U of Co different?

That's true, although they lost the civil lawsuit which is what counts. The university is remaining very tight-lipped for a reason. I'm guessing they have culpability and they know it.

CNN reported that he didn't take his oral exam, not that he failed it. According to their reporting, he withdrew from the program by sending an e-mail that he was doing so before taking the exam. No one from the university saw him in the run up to the exam (and there was no reason they would have.) As someone who was recently in grad school, this is not that unusual. It isn't the norm, but plenty of people withdraw before exams or at the end of their first year. This wouldn't necessarily be a sign, in and of itself, of anything more than the person realizing that they didn't like the program and didn't want to bother with the exam.

Folks, an important distinction is that Holmes was a PhD student while Cho was an undergrad. I don't know if legally there is a difference but in practice, grad students are considered adults who take responsibility for their work, don't usually live in dorms and don't need the same "in loco parentis" kind of attention given to young undergrads.

My mom, my best friend, and many acquaintances do, and that's just ridiculous to suggest that they are oppressed in any way. If he's mentally ill, that's certainly another discussion, but come on here.

Yeah, that was not my experience my first year. I think it depends on what field you're in and what your department is like.

Is that what he was labeled here in DCUM??? I am the OP and I am still sure that Zimmerman is the thug, not Trayvon. And about this guy trying to play mental games i don't think so. He is delusional.

Yeah, I think that probably the people who are sympathetic to Trayvon are more likely to be the ones sympathetic to Holmes. I think the ones who called Trayvon a thug are probably the ones who are arguing against gun control in the Holmes' threads.

And I think you're making a lot of assumptions without enough information. It's just as prejudiced to call Trayvon a thug as issue the labels that you are.

Okay, I won't make any guesses about the intentions of anyone on DCUM because it's just prejudiced. Fine.
