How painful is Mirena insertion?

Anonymous
Yikes! These stories make me glad that I opted for a tubal after my 2nd c-section.

When I went through a biopsy it was soooooo painful that now I'm scared of every little procedure down there… The discomfort didn't last long but it was intense! That's why I want to know if there's any way to have anesthesia, maybe even local… I don't know...

Uterine biopsies are barbaric.

11/18/2013 I had the Implanon removed and the Mirena inserted in one office visit. The Implanon removal did not hurt at all, but took some time because of the fat that had developed around the Implanon. Then it was on to the insertion of the Mirena. OUCH!!! There were three parts to the insertion where I experienced pain.

1) The measurement of my uterus with a long plastic stick that's inserted into your cervix and on to your roof of your uterus.

2) Some type of clip is placed on my cervix and that hurt even more, but subsided after a few seconds.

3) Then the IUD itself. It was passed into my uterus and when the applicator was withdrawn and the IUD more or less popped into place, there as a massive pinch followed by a cramp/contraction of some type. That was the worse. But it was over. The strings were immediately trimmed and the forceps to open my vagina was removed very promptly. There was no unnecessary pain. Each step was anticipated as they verbally walked me through each step as we progressed through the procedure. I was not nervous or fearful. I felt the urge to poop and I asked the doctor if the device would come out if I pushed out a bowel movement. He said that was highly unlikely. My body was reacting to this object. I also felt a hot flash. By the time I got up from the table I was feeling relatively normal without any sharp pains.

When I left the clinic, I took 300 mg of Ibuprofen at 4PM. I had already taken 750mg (a pill in a half) about 20 minutes before I went to the clinic at 2PM. Around 6PM I was feeling uncomfortable so I took another half pill, 300 mg and felt better shortly thereafter. I went to the nail spa and sat in the spa chair for a leg and back massage that are included in the pedicure, and I drank a cup of hot decaf coffee. Then I went home feeling like my pain was in control. There was reddish/brown discharge.

11/19/2013 I had mild pain overnight. Changed my position in bed and layed on my belly to feel better. It worked. When I woke up to start my day 8:30, I had another decaf coffee with a small meal and an 800mg ibuprofen. I went back to bed for a little while to make sure it had kicked in. About one hour after taking the ibuprofen I was pain free 10AM. My period is more or less due because it has been more than a month, but I have not started it yet... I noticed an increased amount of clear discharge this morning. There was some light brown mixed in with it.

11/22/2013 Has been the worst day yet as far as pain management is concerned. The last two days I have been able to manage with little ibuprofen, but today was unbearable. I pooped three times starting this morning and the last BM after I had a large quantity of green tea just before going to the gym. I could not even finish my work out. All of a sudden I was hit with an unbearable wave of pain in my lower right side. I got off the stair stepper and I had to go sit down!!! I then proceeded to the restroom and sat their complaining to strangers in the bathroom for about 15 minutes until I finished pooping. Then I mustered the courage to go and get in the Jacuzzi to help with the pain. It helped enough for me to float out to my car where I found a 600mg (ibuprofen) and a half and I took it immediately. I'm in bed now with pain and it all started at about 10PM. It's now almost 2AM and the pain is BARELY starting to subside. I don't know why this bout of cramps is so much worse than anything I have felt in the past days since insertion. I have even worked out (HARD) for an hour and 15 minutes in the park and I felt NOTHING. This feels like the start of a miscarriage, which I have experienced in 2009. I'm going to take another 800mg. I am willing to tolerate Ibuprofen-managed cramping for 7 consecutive days outside of normal menstruation time, but no longer. I can't see myself taking Motrin everyday to keep this thing in. That can't be normal when Ibuprofen have adverse effects when used constantly...

Monday can't get here fast enough... Waiting....

^ Why are you waiting until Monday? That sounds miserable.

I really want this thing to work. Today is Saturday the 23rd and I am not feeling any pain so far... I just work up and walked around to go pee and weigh myself. The Implanon was in part responsible for the 20 plus pounds I had while having it in fro February 2011 until the 18th of November when I got this. I work in an industry where I am very physically active and I have to maintain my weight. I went from 135 to 168 after getting the Implanon. Now it's time to have a cup of coffee and some breakfast. I went to the gym and had the best workout yesterday, as compared to when I almost passed out on the 21st. To manage yesterday's pain (11/22/2013) I took an 800mg ibuprofen early in the morning with breakfast and later in the afternoon, I took a 600mg inuprofen. Before I went to sleep after midnight I had a small glass of wine... I slept pain free. Today I am going swimming at the gym.

I wrote the above and today has been great.
Today (11/24/2013) I feel MUCH BETTER!!! I have not had to take any pain medicine and I only had very mild cramps in the morning between the time I woke up and after my first meal. Nothing that relaxation can't handle. I suspect the onset of the major cramping was actually due to my monthly period. The bleeding/pain today is consistent with day three of my usual period.

It's so painful not having it again

I wanted to share my experience with inserting Mirena this afternoon. I am 38, have a 18 y.o. son.
I have read all the reviews here prior to my appointment, to manage my own expectations. I was prepared for the worst, thinking giving birth so many years ago would be the same as never giving birth.
Happy to report that the insertion was barely noticeable. I felt one slight pinch during the entire procedure and was shocked when she told me she was done. I think it helped that I am on the second day of my period, so my cervix is slightly open.

Wish everyone's insertion was so painless and easy.

I had one put in last month. I took 3 Advil an hour before the appointment (dr's office told me to). Like the PP I felt a pinch. I had some mild cramping. It took about 2 minutes. It wasn't bad at all. I went in expecting a lot more pain.

Just went today and I have had it two other times after both my children. It was 7 hours ago and I feel like I'm having mild contractions still. My other two experiences were fine. Never hurt had mild cramping and that was all. The same doctor has done all three so very confused on why it is hurting so bad now. I passed out and got very nauseous right after this one also. I'm assuming that it didn't hurt as bad because I just gave birth a month before on the other two.

I am happy to report that since this post quoted above, I am having very light and short periods with my Mirena. I check it monthly around the same time to make sure it is in place and good to go and so far so good. Having it since November 18, 2013 I find that my biggest complaint, if any, are the OCCASIONAL cramps that I may experience about roughly four times a month as my hormones are shifting gears. These particular cramps last about 30 seconds tops, and they range from mild to sharp. They are usually on my lower left or lower right side. I experienced this the day of placement, so I know it's associated directly with the Mirena, plus I did not have this before. All in all, I am happy that I have the Mirena. No pill to remember, light and brief menstrual symptoms, and all I have to do is make sure it's in place by checking the strings once per month. I would advise all ladies to continue using [b]condoms as a means of STD protection if you are not with him exclusively, and of course there is no substitute for a good old fashioned trip to the local clinic for an STD test. Mirena is designed to prevent pregnancy, not STD. Other than this, I am signing off ladies! I am glad I have a Mirena. Too bad this is not more readily available to women in developing countries where they have little or no choice when to get married and/or start having children. If only the Universe was more fair.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that I have lost 7.6 pounds since insertions as well. I have power walked outside in the fresh air about four days a week and made subtle changes in my diet. I am drinking plenty of water and just taking better care of myself overall. Some people say that they gin weight and have mood swings as if on the shot, but I have not experienced any of that. I have 30 more pounds to go because I want to be a lean and toned 125. Wish me luck!
