| Just had mine done three hours ago. Incredibly painful for a split second...I jumped. 5 seconds later, I felt relief with slight cramping. By the time I walked out of the office, I didn't feel a thing, and I haven't since. Not even cramping. Have read that many women experience worse cramps during their first period after insertion, so we'll see. So far, especially after hearing some of the stories, I'm very pleased. |
I agree! I had 2 c-sections, which I found had a painless recovery. I didn't even fill the prescription for painkillers once I left the hospital. That said, I never dilated during either pregnancy and insertion was so painful that the doctor and I decided it wasn't going in. |

Got mine yesterday. I have had 2 vaginal deliveries.
The first cramp, when then doc clamps you with the forceps, was very painful for about a second and a half. The rest was fine--uncomfortable, but not a big deal, not worse than a pap. Yesterday I had period-like cramping high in my back. Today I feel great. |
| I can't address the insertion bc I had mine put in during surgery-for something else-but it has been almost a week and I am having really bad lower back pain, on both sides..spotting and cramping-when will it go away? |

Old timer here. Sorry for the dumb question, but why would a Mirena hurt more than any other IUD? I've seen this thread resurface time and time again, and it's obviously got a lot of comments, so why is this particular IUD getting so much attention on DCUM?
I had a CU-7 many years ago and it went fine. Are there ones that don't hurt and if so, why wouldn't you get those? Thanks. |
| I literally felt nothing when mine was inserted. My OB hinted that some docs are better at inserting them than others. For the record, I've had 3 vaginal deliveries and had it inserted 6 weeks postpartum with my last. |
| mine was extremely painful and doc was unable to get in the first try. nearly fainted in the office. came back a second time and they put me under general anesthesia to get it in. worth it though! |
| Had one inserted yesterday and i thought i was going to die. It was painful and uncomfortable i felt like i was going to pass out and vomit i felt like i was in labor for the entire day. Better today. Never again. |
| I had mine inserted today and it was/is the most intense pain I have ever felt. And that is coming from someone who has has 2 children naturally with no epidurals and has a high thresh-hold for pain. I also was on my menstrual. 9 hours later I am still cramping and feeling as I have to vomit. At my initial appointment I was told it would not hurt at all so I did not take any pain meds to help with the pain. Hopefully the pain is worth it in the end, but I don't think I will ever go through the procedure again. |
| I just had mine inserted today and I will never do it again. I have no idea how my body will react to it in the future - I may later feel the pain was worth it. But as far as I am currently concerned, it was the most painful experience of my life. Even though I am on my period, my doctor still had to dilate my cervix....twice. I don't even know how long the pain lasted but I have never screamed so much in my life and I had waves of nausea for a few hours after. It felt like a white hot knife was slicing through my uterus for several minutes. It was like medieval torture. I brought my mother in case I could not drive after, and thank god I did cause I have had horrible cramps since the insertion. I took lots of precautions, was not tense (was telling stories and laughing up until she decided to dilate), have a Very high pain tolerance, and had taken 4 200mg pills of Motrin throughout the hours before hand. My doctor gave me a 600mg pill right after and wrote me a prescription for more. She said how sorry she was I went through that pain - she'd never seen a reaction THAT bad - but assured me that everything went alright and the trouble had been my incredibly tight cervix (no children). Every other woman I know who has gotten Mirena has loved it and no one has had anything close to my experience, so it is definitely a case by case basis. But I would recommend if you have never had a child and are not very sexually active (my bf lives overseas so I have been celibate for 6 months), to consider a different form of birth control before an IUD. |

| Had mine done today. Insertion was painful two or three times and my OB told me before each pain that it was coming. Each time, it was only about 5-10 seconds, about the same pain as moderate menstrual cramps. Part of it was that I was at the end of my period (I mean VERY end) and my cervix was closed, so the OB had to dilate it. That is what hurt the most. Afterward, a little crampy, but nothing a little Advil can't handle. |
| Does anyone know if they can give you general anesthesia at least for a few minutes to insert Mirena? |
hell no the time it would take to put you under and wake you up is not worth it for a minute procedure--did u mean local?? |
| Just got mine inserted about two hours ago. There was some discomfort a couple of times during he process but no big deal. I am having some cramps now, but I think some Motrin will do the trick. |
