How painful is Mirena insertion?

Anonymous
Mine was probably equally painful to labor - which was awful. Wish someone could explain why it is so painful for some and fine for others. I had a vaginal delivery which I know some have speculated would help.

It is very strange that there is such a huge variation! I just had mine inserted yesterday. Hardly any pain at all and I had forgotten to take any Advil beforehand. Once I got home, I felt a bit crampy so I took 600mg of ibuprofen and then felt completely fine.

I got mine 3 months post partum so maybe that's why is was so easy for me.

It is because people experience pain differently. My doctor said it also depends on your cervix.

I have two kids (teens) and my gyn is recommending mirena for abnormally long periods. I'm afraid...not only of the insertion, but also of the potential side effects (weight gain, heart palpitations, etc). Anyone care to share their experiences?

After about 6 weeks I had to have it pulled out because I could always feel it. I hope for your sake your experience is different than mine. I would never consider it again.

This is really unusual - OP, make sure that your provider has experience inserting IUDs.

I felt something similar to a mild labor contraction for a couple seconds, and then some mild menstrual-like cramps after that. I took a dose of motrin and was fine. I am on my second IUD and won't go back to any other form of birth control (until DH gets snipped...)

I won't go back to anything else either, mirena is so easy and effective. However, I must say, my second insertion was excruciating!!! I sympathize with it being worse than child birth. My second insertion after the first five years was terrible, I guess because my uterus was so out of practice with pain. I hadn't had a period in 4 years and/or a child in 5 so it was a whole new level!

I had my second Mirena inserted today. Like the first time (9 years ago, pre-kids) it was done during my period and it was pretty painless. Some minor cramping that would be expected with fiddling with the cervix (one miscarriage, 4 IUDs, 1 IVF, and two unmedicated deliveries, I'm pretty familiar with that sensation...). The first was inserted at a Planned Parenthood the second by a Midwife. The MW definitely used a local anastethic, but I don't remember if one was used the first time. I am a bit crampy tonight...almost as if my cervix is a bit sore.

All women are different, though. Am grateful mine were smooth.

I've been on birth control for 10 years.. My new doctor switched me off the pills to mirena. I just left the doctors office and the insertion was horrible. I'm 27 years old with a pretty good tolerance of pain and it was a nightmare-most pain I've ever put my body through so far. I did not take anything prior because I didn't know anything about its pain level. Even when I did my own research I didn't see much on the pain. Therefore, I think it's right to let the readers know there IS the possibility of severe pain during insertion. I do not have kids and my doctor definitely did not warn me that it was going to hurt so bad. I yelled, squeezed onto the nurse, felt dizzy, wanted to throw up, sweat, and almost passed out. I had to get someone to come pick me up. I'm home ready for a nap now with a slight headache and cramping.. We'll see what comes within the next few months. I'm deathly afraid it will make me gain weight. I also have to go back to get it checked in a month. I hope they don't have to use ANY of the new instruments they used on me today.

I had one like that and two relatively painless insertions. PPs, did your docs numb your cervix before insertion?
