How about whether to hold an A meet on July 4th, simply because it's a Saturday, or do the right thing and have the meet on Friday the 3rd?

Pools are running meets on national holidays?

Wait until I tell you about the baseball and soccer tournaments on Memorial Day. You’ll be shocked that an event from 8:00 to 10:30 am would happen on July 4th.

Not the best comparison given that many places have parades, etc. on the morning of July 4th. Our swim team always participates in our town’s parade and building our float, etc is a highlight of the summer.

Plus, with Memorial Day sports tournaments your whole weekend is already shot. You are also playing on Saturday and Sunday. Moving summer swim meets to the morning of July 3rd lets families that want to get out of town for (most of) the long weekend do so while still making the meet.

Hard to see any good reason not to move meets to July 3.

Also worth noting that Memorial Day tournaments are voluntary. Teams choose to sign up for them. Many teams choose not to so as not to impact the holiday weekend.

…also worth noting that swim meets are voluntary…

You seem obsessed with having meets on the holiday. Fits the title of this thread. Good to see that many teams are taking the more rational approach and agreeing to move to July 3.

Quite the leap to get obsessed here. Are you familiar with the 4th of July Vienna Relays? A meet run annually on…no, you’ll never guess when.

Never heard of them.

We will be spending July 4th with our kids on the swim team float at our town parade and then at our pool’s 4th of July party (which starts at 10am, right after the parade).. We are quite happy that our meet was moved to July 3 to allow our swimmers to participate in these fun annual events.

And I’ve never heard of a town parade in NVSL territory 🤷🏽‍♀️

Fairfax and Great Falls both have 4th of July parades. So do a number of neighborhoods in Arlington.

We're erecting an arch in our neighborhood on the 4th.

I know of the Fairfax City parade. Fairfax City is a city- nobody that lives there would ever call it a “town parade”.

And again, there are no towns in Arlington, so I was asking what town has a parade.

We loosely asked about waitlists and were told pool has a long one and they don't do line cuts for fast swimmers. We have pride in getting what we can from the middling division range, and repping our immediate neighborhood.

We also knew moving pools would create some awkward situations with classmates, friends whose kids would get bumped if we rolled over to their pool and frankly weren't sure it would be an all-around welcome.

Would have been fun to feel rush of being a big dog for sure ... especially because the B meet swimmers at that pool mock our kids for their significantly lower division standing.

Why do people feel the need to say top tier d1-d3, when really they mean d3? The d1 teams don't need this nonsense and have sufficient depth across the age groups they dont need your all star kid to be competitive.

(Fellow NVSL D1 parent here): That’s really only true for Tuckahoe, and maybe Chesterbrook in some age groups. I’m certain the other D1 teams would welcome new pool members whose kids are also excellent teammates and swimmers. I mean, per above, OKM lost 6 of their fastest kids to military or other moves just this year, and Oakton has huge age group gaps. The only thing holding these teams back from gaining new teammates is a waitlist (except OKM, which has no waitlist but is significantly farther away from the other 5 teams).

This wasn't about whether d1 pools (even Chesterbrook and Tuckahoe) would welcome new swimmers who are "good teammates and swimmers." The point was that d1 teams don't need to try to convince d7 parents that their All Star Champs swimmer should join their club to make it more competitive. There is a huge difference between D3 and D1 in depth across age groups, as OKM has experienced first hand, and D1 already gets enough criticism (some of it rightly deserved) without a parent from a mid-division trying to lump their d3 pipe dream in with the d1 drama.

You seem like you're real fun around the dive well

My childhood pool had a full bar with cocktails/hard liquor at summer swim meets. Imagine a meet today with a bunch of dads in shirtsleeves with their dress pants rolled up and ties flipped over their shoulders timing a meet with a gin and tonic in hand.

Moms did scoring and bullpen because it was widely agreed that they were the only ones who could handle the computers. This was in the mid to late 80s and I can only guess that bar sales were fueling the purchase of multiple computers and elaborate support equipment all to be used solely for children’s summer rec swimming.

One pool in our league has a tiki bar and we all still look back fondly on that meet. I didn't see a single person drunk. Everyone just enjoyed a frozen margarita when it was 95 degrees out. I'm sure they rake in the money with that cute bar.

DP but let it go!! Jesus. There are some parades on the 4th of July. This isn’t believable?? Apparently you don’t know about them but thank you for the class no one asked for on town vs city vs county.

It is called the Country Club league here and it still exists if you are part of it. They also rarely post on this board because they don't care.

And the club swimmers in the country club league also tend to swim for NVSL or MCSL on top of CCL.

NP. Do you not get the difference between a city marketing team’s marketing and what people actually call things in real life?

This is a poorly worded question. Please ask again. I don’t know if you are referring to Great Falls or Fairfax. What I do know is that by asking this question, you have proven that you’ve never lived in an independent city.

I live in Great Falls, so I think I have this one covered. Many people here call Great Falls a town. Village is also used, which is also the name of the commercial area by Walker Road and Georgetown Pike. There is no “city marketing team” or government. Great Falls is unincorporated. No one calls Great Falls a city.

Happy to answer any other questions an about our town.
