AAP decisions in

I'm also amazed at the things she creates in Minecraft. We only just bought an iPad for her to use when we let her, and she loves building houses and whatever other creative structures. But I'm not sure the panel would be interested in or impressed by digital samples.

Do you have any writing samples from this year? Either handwritten or on her school Google Drive? If she's already getting advanced math, then that's been established (especially if her Performance Matters assessment scores have been high)/easy to establish. She's needing the documentation that she can/needs more in Language Arts/Social Studies/Science.

My kid is a social studies/language arts kid. I sent slides of a PowerPoint presentation on an historical topic as a work sample when we appealed successfully a few years ago. Along with a WISC.

Yes, her teacher said she submitted writing samples as well. Not sure what the HOPE ratings were, so I just requested her packet. I have a feeling we're in a competitive pyramid based on other people's comments. She also has trouble finishing work on time in class. We're considering going to pediatrician to ask about ADHD.

What WISC score is usually needed for a successful appeal?

Still didnt get in. Based on scores, thinking HOPE score? or work samples? Teacher doesnt seem to know child since fairly quiet and does as asked. But, very very bored at school and concerned over this for next year.

Step 1 - request submission packet with hope score from aart or principal. Do this today.

is this 2nd grade or 3rd ? If it is 3rd, I would say the MAP is a little bit low, if it is 2nd grade , go to appeal it ,definitely a good score

I've requested it from AART and based on feedback here, will start to search threads on countering HOPE scores and add'l work products. Also a 2E kid so need to fugure out how (if?) that plays in.

Did you make it clear that DC is 2E? If not, make sure that’s crystal clear this round. Other than that, try to review the application with as objective a view as you can as to what might have been the weakest point(s) of the application and try to bolster that section or those sections. Btw, I’m not affiliated with FCPS, had just planned to take that approach if needed. Give my recommendation the weight (or lack thereof) that it’s due.

really appreciate response! We didn't mention child is 2E in parent q - mostly based on advice that 2E could be seen as a liability. We did, however, address it lightly in 504 form. Sadly, i think the 2E is what impacted the HOPE score so nothing to lose now!

Absolutely mention the 2E. AAP loves those kids.

It's too late for this, but my kids used Reflections (PTA art competition) entries for language arts samples. It's nice because the kids have to write up how the entry relates to the competition theme as part of the entry, so the whole idea of having your kids write about their sample is baked into the competition by its nature.

Otherwise for any sample, our AART always said have your kids write a couple sentences describing it.

My child is a 3rd grader at Springfield Estates. We went to the open houses for both schools. I had been leaning heavily towards staying at the home school, but they seemed to phone it in and couldn't answer basic questions. I'm not sure how one teacher can differentiate to the extent needed when there are AAP and non-AAP kids in the class. Springfield Estates teachers came to the open house to sell their program.

There are two 3rd grade AAP classes at Springfield Estates. My child's teacher is very enthusiastic. I've heard good things about the other teacher, too. I have seen what my child is doing and what the kids are our home school are doing, and it's very different. The work isn't hard per se, but there is more of it and the math is accelerated. There is a lot of focus on language arts (vocab, grammar) in addition to math. They also do some interesting projects. Everyone there is extremely friendly. Many of my child's friends also went to Springfield Estates, and they have been able to maintain friendships with kids at the home school, which was my main concern.

Anonymous wrote:We applied from the private school and didn’t get in. How do we even know if we are “in pool” or not? Is it worth appealing? Also, we are about to change school pyramids and will provide a new address if we appealed. Does it make a difference?

I don’t think you can be in pool, this is a school specific thing. It’s a certain percentage of students based on NGAT for whom the school will prepare an application even if parents don’t refer. It’s just one of the paths to be reviewed by the central committee, and is not a guarantee.

Got it, thank you! Looking at the scores that others are sharing - we have 135 Non-verbal Cogat and also high scores on NNAT (don’t remember the number). How are people with lower numbers getting in?

what was the scores for the other parts of the cogat? verbal and quantitative? and their composite?

Not average. They're good scores, but yes, it's possible these scores are lower than the other kids who got in at that school. I think around 210ish is the 99% cutoff, but maybe someone else has the exact number?

my first grader had 207 for MAP and was 99%. my other child’s iready when they were in 2nd was maybe only 80% and it was over 500 for fall
i bet that iready is 70ish %
