Just boosters, personally would be choosing between UNC and aMichigan, UGA isn’t in the same tier.

We heard apps to UGA are up. Top DC private.

Not at ours. Although any applications would be an increase. Top of class favors UVA, UCs, UNC, MI. Lower end U of SC, Tennessee, Auburn.

Your school might be a little behind. It’s okay, the kids getting in UGA seem to be really excited!

Why this UGA craving for social acceptance? It’s a fine school in a fast growing, increasingly diverse state. Perfectly reasonable for someone to select it over UNC and Michigan. Who cares who applies, accepts and who doesn’t?

Agreed. Hopefully the poster in denial that kids from top privates apply goes away.

Well, some kids from said privates actually attending the school would be a start.

At this point you’re derailing the thread. You failed to prove your point. Go away.

Actually I think the poster who said UGA was as popular at local privates as UNC and MI failed to prove their point but I can move on.

Reading comprehension might be hard for you. The claim wasn’t necessarily that UGA is as popular, the claim was UGA is close enough to those schools to be a legitimate consideration. Hardy a controversial statement.

For some reason that triggered you and you then made repeated erroneous claims. Good thing you’re moving on. Happy trails.

I said no one from any of the “big” DC privates has posted a committed to UGA. How was that erroneous, it’s clearly demonstrably true.

You've encountered a prolific and challenged poster.

Because you cited social media and it’s not May 1 LOL

You sound not that smart, it is still true that no one has posted a commitment to UGA on insta. The fact that that someone might in the future doesn’t make the statement untrue.

Resorting to personal attacks, eh? Let’s not stoop to name calling, that’s provincial behavior.

If everyone posted on social media and we were past the deposit deadline you might have a point. But neither of those things are true, so your suggestion remains unproven.
.

What you seem to be saying is that you think my assertion is premature, it is clearly true so not correct to say it is erroneous. Are you a Uga alum?

Plus the fact that whether DC private kids commit to UGA is irrelevant as to whether a UGA is a good choice for a particular applicant.

NP here. since UGA is not binding, the kids I know who may go there are visiting again. They got into other state flagships more highly ranked than Georgia. Also, some don’t apply to UVA/UNC bc much different vibe from the 40k student schools.

It might not be what you would do but doesn’t make it wrong.

Haven’t really seen any UGA commitments on Schools insta sites.

UGA doesn’t have ED so that’s not unusual. It’s a popular place, go see for yourself.

But EA is out and no posted commitments from any of the DC privates. Please correct me if I’ve missed one.
Perhaps it is an up and coming school, but MI and UNC have already arrived.

EA commitments aren’t due until May 1 and not everyone posts on social media, therefore your claim certainly isn’t conclusive.

Uh. EA commitments for UVA came out last Friday. I’m on its campus as I type

EA decisions did. Commitments = putting down the deposit to attend the institution in the fall.

2 wildly different things.

Don't you mean EA admits? Students usually have until 5/1 to pay their deposit.

But it does take a lot of out-of-state students (a much higher percentage than comparable state schools). And it does feel a responsibility to limit how many students from Northern Virginia so that it can take some from the Rest of Virginia.

And it, of course, limits how many it takes from a particular high school in NOVA. These are not quotas or hard limits but they are a reality and it hurts TJ more than any other school, then probably the most high performing HS in Virginia (the McLeans and Langleys) and then of course the private high schools.

All of those schools have far more applicants who would likely be accepted if they were from Roanoke than those who actually get in.

In other words, it is not yield protection, it is that your peers are very strong. It feels unfair but that is the reality in a lot of schools.

Spot on. OP, why not just accept this common sense explanation? Why do you insist on making it into a conspiracy? Is your very accomplished kid so fragile that he or she can't handle one deferral?

DP. Don’t live in Virginia, didn’t apply to UVA, but kids getting in to HYP but not UVA seems like obvious yield protection to me.

In my opinion the burden is on the people saying that UVA doesn’t yield protect to show that UVA in-state has a lower admissions rate and a higher SAT range than HYP.

If you can’t show that, all this chatter about how UVA is actually, secretly, far more selective than any other school on earth is just nonsense.

You're mentioning completely outlier situations. Very few people get into HYP and are rejected from UVA. It is possible that someone with a very specific hook gets into a particular Ivy but does not get into UVA.

Look... how do we know that UVA does not yield protect? First of all, it wouldn't make sense. There are incredibly strong students who are accepted to Ivies but choose UVA because of the money. Second, my kids go to one of the strongest NOVA high schools. I have seen the scattergrams and the top right corner is a sea of green with an occasional red X. Schools that yield protect do not look like this. Period. They don't.

Absolutely no one has said that UVA has a lower admissions rate or a higher SAT range than HYP. That would be patently false.

The kid I know who got into Yale but not UVA was OOS and had no Yale-specific hooks. Super-strong, well-rounded student.

My sense is that UVA yield protects for OOS admissions, not in-state. They know that they have a good chance of yielding in-state students because of tuition. But OOS is much more challenging with costs not much lower than those of private schools.

I see the opposite from UVA at the 2 top DMV privates my kids attended and my 3rd kid (a senior) attends. UVA has a GPA line. If you're over it, you're in. If you're under it, you're not. OOS vs in-state does not really matter. The line is very high at both schools and is Ivy-level (even HYP level).

The magical line. [b]And all you have to do is scribble some nonsense for an essay and get in.

But if you knew anything about UVA, you would then know there was no essay this year.

UVA hates VA privates is the explanation we are primarily hearing.

Doubt it. Bet $ it is rigor. Yes I have years of inside data at mine and a few VA privates; we all share anonymous data.
Most DMV privates end up with about 15% of the total class gaining acceptance to UVA, some more some less.
When the rare kid at our private got in to UNC and deferred UVA EA, they were not considered to have taken the top rigor at the high school: others had similar GPA with better rigor and got in . UNC does not know the private as well as UVA does, as far as rigor, and tends to focus more on GPA and SAT. The school usually gets 3-5 kids into UNC OOS and typically all get in to uva. When one does not, it is rigor, especially if the SAT is very high. Slightly low rigor with a very high SAT when others at the school with lower SAT have the same or better GPA with MORE rigor are going to get into UVA instead. Every time.

Yes, which ties into being only in the top 20% of the class. That’s too low for UVA

A school of UVA's stature really should have essays.

Possible reasons for no essay:

1) Too risky given UVA's settlement with the government where the president has to personally certify no race based admissions and data provided to government
2) Maximize applications by making it as easy to apply as possible
3) With huge numbers applying EA and getting acceptances by early February, there is no time for reading.
