not sure if it's harder, feels easier i think... it's very popular this year from our mcps school, 1.5 times more than last year.

Why is it more popular this year?

I’m so sorry. That is surprising!

That is honestly embarrassing for VT. Why wouldn’t someone like that get in, especially in state? Appalling. I don’t even have a dog in the fight but…

You know they can't take everyone with those stats, right? They have a certain number they can accept. Some kids won't get in. There's nothing "embarrassing" about it, except for parents/kids who think this school is a safety.

They don't "TAKE everyone". Last year they had a yield of 23%.

Vtech Waitlist 2026 FAQ - https://admit.vt.edu/www/documents/2026%20FY%20Waitlist%20FAQ.pdf

What are my chances for selection from the waitlist?
We cannot make a final decision until all the responses from applicants offered admission are returned. Therefore, we cannot
answer questions about your chances of being selected for admission at this time. This year Virginia Tech received more than
58,000 applications and we expect 7,251 students to accept our offer and enroll. If we have fewer than 7,251 students accept our
offer, we will offer admission to some of the students who chose to remain on our waitlist.

What is Virginia Tech’s history of selecting students from the waitlist?
In 2025, we were able to offer 4,485 applicants from the waitlist. In 2024, we were able to offer 1,517 applicants from the waitlist. In
2023, we were unable to offer any applicants from the waitlist. In 2022, we were able to offer 2,458 applicants from the waitlist. In
2021, we were able to offer 3,286 applicants from the waitlist. In 2020 we were able to offer 3,961 applicants from the waitlist. In
2019 we were unable to make any offers. As you can see, the number of students ultimately receiving offers from the waitlist is
highly unpredictable and varies each year.

Vtech is saying they received 58,000 applications and expect 7,251 acceptances, which is ~12.5%
They don't say how many students they sent acceptances.

they offered 7,251 yes letters? They don't think all of the 7,251 will say yes but they plan to fill 7,251 so will pull from wait list after they hear back from the initial acceptances. How many do they take in RD round?

They offered way more than 7.251 spots. They expect to fill 7,251 based on historical yield from those offers. If the trend looks low, they will pull from waitlist.

They pull most from EA - they consider RD as "space available."

They are very transparent - https://udc.vt.edu/irdata/data/students/admission/index#college

Their listed OOS COA (including indirect costs) is ~$65k *plus* many colleges have additional fees adding another 2k or so.

Did they think kid will not attend and only applied as a back up school?

"Yield Protection
Virginia Tech does not participate in yield protection.

Lying liars!! 100% lies.

One look at TJ scattergram would put to rest this lie.

The top TJ students who all get into T20, get accepted to UVA and are rejected by V Tech.

VT is not doing anything wrong, as none of these kids have any intention of going to V Tech. That is fair. What is wrong is the lying to the face by VT that they do not yield protect.

We applied in 2025 cycle and after looking at the scattergram did not apply to VT. Got in to a HYP and UVA and he would nearly certainly have been rejected by VT.

Its difficult because when your child has high stats, and a school like VT is their dream school (even if they can go to "better" schools), how to show their high interest without Early Decision.

This really is shocking. I hope she will get in later.

I agree. So sorry about this! In State or OOS?

VT definitely yield protects and has been doing so for years. People have reported waitlisted s for extremely strong students who have good ECs in this board for years but just because VT puts a line on their website, people pretend they are not accepted because of some other actual reason.

If none of those kids have any intention of going to VT, why are they applying?

Do you think perhaps they also didn't put much time and effort into the VT essays?

I know VT admissions staff personally. It is related to my job. They do not yield protect. They do not care about yield - it is not a ranking motivator for them. If it were, they would have kept ED - best yield protection there is.

Honest question: how many of these waitlisted or rejected stellar students would have gone if accepted?

I have no more insight into VT admissions than your local skunk. I have huge sympathy for in-state students with first rate ability who absolutely wanted VT because it meets their interests and talents.

All the folks writing how shocked they are with results don’t say if their kid would actually have gone. Many have their sights set on something else; they just expected the admit.

My guess is VT is saving some seats for other regions of the state.

They are have also been expanding class size, which isn’t all great bc housing is becoming a high profit private enterprise. To be fair, this is true at other universities too.

To enthusiastic, in-state students with academic excellence, I hope you are admitted.
