If the kids were leaving the school during lunch, the school clearly failed in its responsibility to ensure kids remain in the building during school hours.

No, the parents failed. Not the schools responsibility. What can they do if kids leave?

When kids are at school, they are under the care of MCPS. What are you talking about?

They were not at school. They left. Mcps cannot stop teens from skipping school. Parents are responsible. Kids do this as there are no consequences and parents don’t care.

Parents and the school both hold some responsibility at preventing what occurred, but now the true consequences should be on the police department.

Those consequences will play a part in preventing others from doing the same things, too, if they're meaningful enough.

How are you going to stop big ass teenagers from leaving school? This isn’t a jail and the MCPS public safety officers are not allowed to touch students unless there is physical danger like a fight. And schools don’t have enough security personnel to begin with

1) School leaders need to admit that they don't have enough security personnel to begin with

2) I'm not sure why you jumped to MCPS security staff aren't allowed to touch students with regard to this discussion, but I'm assuming it's because you assume the only way to prevent kids from leaving the building is by physically restraining. If that is the case, MCPS should point out that policy that is preventing them from stopping kids from leaving schools and we can have a discussion with the BOE about amending that policy if we feel it's getting in the way of stopping kids from leaving school.

Has MCPS done or said either of those things? No. So why are you holding them blameless?

I mean, plenty of schools have open lunch. Have you never heard of this?

Per the article, open lunch is only allowed for seniors. It does not appear that all 11 of these kids were seniors.

And if the school's policy is that only seniors are allowed to leave campus for open lunch, there has to be some mechanism for enforcement of that rule by the school.

Former Whitman grad from early 2000’s. Kids from W have been doing drugs since as long as I can remember. We used to access it from friend’s parents (hidden in their closets) and bring to school, during open lunches, parties, etc. In hindsight, the school did what they could to educate and prevent, but when kids can party at home or parents don’t bother to discipline when it goes missing, then it really is on the parents for not parenting. Too much money and power means kids think they are invincible.

This. I grew up in Gaithersburg and all my drug dealers were Whitman and Churchill kids. Best parties were always off River Rd
