How is Georgetown for a non-Catholic (but still Christian) gay white boy interested in languages? We aren’t wealthy and I’m a little worried that it’ll be mostly Georgetown Prep type families and uber-rich international students. But maybe that last part is true of all the elite colleges.
Good luck on ND for the original OP. I guess I shouldn’t highjack your thread… sorry. |
| My GU student has several gay roommates...anecdotally, it is totally not an issue there. |
Georgetown openly states on campus tours that they are not into that Catholic stuff. They also hide their Catholic roots on their website and social media. You have to look very attentively to find any genuine mention of Catholicism from Georgetown University. Georgetown is fine as a secular university. They are no longer a Catholic university. The Jesuits made a conscious decision to dump the Faith at Georgetown many years ago, and succeeded quite well. People go to Georgetown because it has strong (secular) programs. They no longer go for a Catholic university educstion or community, because Georgetown doesn't want Catholic education or even Catholic culture and heritage. |
You're confusing Jesuit with vanilla Catholic. Not the same thing. |
| Georgetown is the oldest Catholic school in the country run by the Jesuit order same order that runs Holy Cross and Fordham. |
My son just finished his freshman fall semester in school of health. Lined up a research position starting in January that it (seems) is going to last all 4 years. He applied with no grades at GU because it was November and I guess they judged based on interview and whatever was on his resume from back in high school? Anyway, it is challenging and he remarked that everyone there is smart. He played club sports, worked out, went running daily, studied and had a very balanced life. Very positive experience....so far. Did not live in the library despite taking chem and bio. |
Glad to hear your freshman had a positive experience. GU is my DC's first choice. The more I read and learn about Georgetown, the more I hope we can make it work. |
Including some who are Catholic! |

My kid loves Georgetown and recently had the interview. The interview was only 20 min though. Is that a terrible sign?
Great kid, should interview well. But now very concerned because it was so short. |
| What is it that people love about Georgetown? My daughter got in REA but it isn't her first choice. Trying to get her excited because she was deferred from her first choice. She is actually applying to other schools RD because she feels Georgetown is too close to home. |
What’s the first choice school? |
I think the alumni interviewers are told to keep it short. Good luck to your DC! |
My son got in and his interview was 30 min max and the interviewer talked more than he did. Don’t worry about time |
We are in a large city that requires a car for everything so being able to walk everywhere is a positive change. For my son, he wasn’t personally interested in Greek life so he likes being at a school where that’s not a main focus is probably good. He toured about 10 schools and knew after our 90 min visit it was his top choice. It can be a personal thing and not everyone will feel same |
I went to Georgetown SFS. You have no idea what you’re talking about when it comes to how they handle religion and those classes. The curriculum for Problem of God is determined by each professor. My professor chose to teach us about the religious justifications used by terrorists. Others taught about the history of atheism. I also took a class on comparative Judeo-Christian theology taught by a Rabbi, Priest, and an Imam. Not once did ANYONE at Georgetown push Catholicism. |
