That is a really good point. IRS regulations (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p526.pdf) state that gifts to a government are tax-deductible if they to be "used solely for public purposes." But "contributions from which you benefit" are not tax-deductible. So the question is, are the people who donate going to benefit in any way? You don't think Trump would invite all the donors to a special reception in his new ballroom, would he?

Yes. Sadly the Trust for the National Mall is taking donations for it. They also were gifted the bribe $$ from Facebook (I think it was $24M). I wrote to them because I'm a past donor and have been invited to special events through the trust, so of course they are going to be invited to the ballroom!

The only reason I knew about it is because I read about their involvement. I didn't see it on their website, but they confirmed/justified it in a response to me: "The White House East Wing ballroom renovation project will be supported by donations that are specifically directed to the project. The project will not be supported by any general or annual fund donations received by the Trust."
