100% this all day long. People who celebrate the holiday can take the day off. To ask the whole district to cancel long-planned events because a holiday moves three weeks out is insane. |
I'm okay with that. Again, asking a trusted Muslim friend instead of promoting logical fallacies an anon board will spare you from looking stupid. But I know you don't care about them, so stay mad about other people's holidays inconveniencing your family. |
I hope you send this message to APS' Board under your own name so that they can see your prejudices for what they are. |

Are you Muslim? Do you personally celebrate this holiday? You sure sound like a white lady. Probably one whose personality is ArlDems and Bikes. |
Even more concerning, not all parents can schedule last-minute childcare on a random Friday. |
This! So many parents are impacted by RTO. Who’s going to spin up camps with three weeks notice for all these kids whose parents have to go in to the office? I can’t believe the board is even considering this. |
I guarantee you she’s white. And probably wouldn’t deign to talk to a Jewish person or conservative Christian either. I suspect her religious friends are limited to one group. |
I will tell my friends of all religions: no more school holidays for religious events. Take an excused absence if you want to participate in your special form of nuttery. |
I’m sure she’s white and prides herself on having friends of many ethnicities while lecturing other white people for not being as inclusive as her. This will impact a lot of Muslim families who need to work and can’t find childcare with short notice. It will impact other minorities and low income students of all races who might not get to go on a field trip or have a field day or school dance. I’m mad that my kids field trip is getting canceled, but realistically, I can afford to give them a nice experience to make up for it. I’m an APS employee so I get the day off but that doesn’t mean I’m not upset about the poor decision making of our board and the intrusion of religion in our public schools. |
Dear Williamsburg Families,
Yesterday, the Superintendent’s Weekly Newsletter announced a proposed calendar change to make Friday, June 6, 2025, an APS holiday to commemorate Eid al-Adha. On December 14, 2023, the School Board approved the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 School Year Calendars and added the holiday in the 2025-2026 year. Understandably, many families have expressed their concern about the late change to this year’s school calendar. This change will affect: - SOL testing and make-up dates - Graduation for Eunice Kennedy Shriver families - Students who rely on APS for meals due to food insecurity - Child care programs that follow the APS calendar - Non-refundable school related field trips and activities Tonight, the School Board will vote to approve this change. The meeting is open to the public and those who wish to speak may register in person between 6:15-6:45 p.m. at the Syphax Education Center. Tonight’s agenda can be accessed here. More information about APS School Board meetings can also be found on their site. You may also contact the School Board to express your concerns. I don't think people are as callous as your post suggests. The calendar is planned in advance for a reason. People don't have limitless days off to watch their kids. I think that's what most people are reacting to. |

Especially since many families have been impacted by RTO. |
Yes, I didn’t complain when summer got shortened and the school year got increasingly choppy due to adding in religious holidays. This is different. This is taking a busy time of year where people have scheduled celebrations and state mandated testing and deciding to close with three weeks notice. I did write to the school board and the superintendent. They need to know that this has real consequences. |
