Our whole economy is BASED ON consumer consumption of lots of cheap crap. What do you think is going to replace that? You can't put the genie back in the bottle and start asking people to buy things that will cost "5-10x more" as you blithely suggest.

Of course the goal isn’t to replace the cheap crap. The new economy will be based on consumer consumption of few good quality stuffs. Yes, you can ask people to buy things that will cost more. I already have nice hand me downs for my kids (I live in a $$$ zip code where people give away quality kids clothes), I buy natural fiber eco-friendly clothes (I prefer fewer nicer items), and I don’t do cheap plastic junk. But boy are these moms who love to share their “hauls” and presents piled under the Christmas tree on social media going to have an identity crisis lol.

I am down with that because I have a HHI of 800k, I bought all my furniture from North Carolina, I buy lots of American made things from small businesses on Etsy. I just don’t know if majority of Americans have room in their budgets to accommodate 5x to 10x price increases but maybe you know mostly wealthy people and it won’t be that big an issue for them.

Because of the $4k, they decided not to buy a new air conditioner and now they are dealing with repair bills, increased energy costs due to the inefficient unit, a day or two off work to wait for the repair person. Because of the $4k, they decided to eat more hot dogs instead of organic chicken, impacting everyone’s health. Because of the $4k, they decided to hold off on signing up Larlo for piano lessons, which he loved. Because of the $4k, they decided not hold off on foundation repairs, and now there is water in the basement.

This isn’t a modular economy. Everything affects everything. Even if you think you are buying “American”, you are not. Ford is way down the list of American made, below at least 20 Japanese/korean models. The North Carolina furniture maker is probably importing fabric from china and sending it to South America to be sewn. What is unsaid is that the “glory days” of American manufacturing happened without OSHA, and often on the backs of criminally low wages for Black Americans, immigrants, and even children.

+1. We lived overseas as expats for many years. I remember living in Austria and being struck by how expensive things like a decent quality winter coat were. Like Eddie Bauer or LL Bean level, not designer. This was true of most goods like clothing, furniture, appliances, etc. Once you realized that most people had one good winter coat and they'd wear it for several years you also realized that's why they only came in black.

Alllllll those Utah Mormon shopping influencers and wanna be influencers are going to be upset when clothes and seasonal doo dads are no longer dirt cheap.

Also the tariffs have already affected the price and availability of the new Nintendo Switch 2 (assembled mostly in Vietnam) so that’s another big thing. Maybe younger people will finally start paying attention.

For all the rich Democrats panicking today- you now know how it must have felt

When Jimmy Carter destroyed 400,000 trucking jobs

When Bill Clinton signed NAFTA, shipping jobs to Mexico and Canada, causing industry to board up in the middle of the country, left to rot

When he deregulated the finance industry and lead us to the 2008 housing crisis

And

When Obama told us: “sorry, some jobs just aren’t coming back”

If you see this post, I hope you look in the mirror at some point today and recognize the destruction your own party has played in the lives of working class Americans

This is what liberation day is all about
