I never liked Trump, but I also very much dislike the Democrats. It'd be too strong to say I was rooting for Trump or that I thought he'd to a good job, but I thought there was a *chance* he'd do a good job, and, for the sake of the country, I was really hoping he would. I didn't vote for him, but I also never seriously considered voting for Harris or Biden. I thought Trump's first term was at moments scary but overall pretty good. With the wind-up, let me say: geez Louise this is going shittily.
You are missing the big picture. It’s bad for Wall Street. But this is going great if you are from Main Street. No pain, no gain. Finally a president who is fighting for main street. Manufacturing jobs will have to come back to the US. If these corporations don’t do it, they will keep watching their stock prices sinking.
and you believe this domestic manufacturing boom will manifest itself within what time frame?
It could take years. It’ll be painful but it will make us stronger. Our kids will thank us. We have been through recessions before and came out stronger. Why are people so scared?
NP. You don't understand that manufacturing ended up in SE Asia because it was cheaper. This was beneficial for the US consumer. "Bringing manufacturing back" will mean that products will cost 5-10x to produce.
It will cost 5-10x more but will be better quality and last longer. The American dream wasn’t about cheap Chinese products. Americans will pay more for good quality US made products.
I am down with that because I have a HHI of 800k, I bought all my furniture from North Carolina, I buy lots of American made things from small businesses on Etsy. I just don’t know if majority of Americans have room in their budgets to accommodate 5x to 10x price increases but maybe you know mostly wealthy people and it won’t be that big an issue for them.
It wasn’t a big issue before Chinese made products started flooding our stores. It will hurt customers but they will adapt.
If by “adapt”, you mean suffer a lower quality of life and scramble to avoid degradation to poverty, then yes, people will adapt. The average family will pay ~$4k a year immediately to increased tariffs. But it’s not just the $4k. Because of the $4k, they decided not to buy a new air conditioner and now they are dealing with repair bills, increased energy costs due to the inefficient unit, a day or two off work to wait for the repair person. Because of the $4k, they decided to eat more hot dogs instead of organic chicken, impacting everyone’s health. Because of the $4k, they decided to hold off on signing up Larlo for piano lessons, which he loved. Because of the $4k, they decided not hold off on foundation repairs, and now there is water in the basement. This isn’t a modular economy. Everything affects everything. Even if you think you are buying “American”, you are not. Ford is way down the list of American made, below at least 20 Japanese/korean models. The North Carolina furniture maker is probably importing fabric from china and sending it to South America to be sewn. What is unsaid is that the “glory days” of American manufacturing happened without OSHA, and often on the backs of criminally low wages for Black Americans, immigrants, and even children. https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/2025-02/MY2025-AALA-Percentage-2.4.25.pdf
