You’re clearly ignorant because that’s not actually what DCPS is allowing. They told these families they would be put into 2nd grade next year if they did this. #factsmatter |
Real problems: not knowing the real problem Real problems: not being trustworthy because you’re making things up 🤷♀️🤷🤷♂️ |
People like you are terrifying because you have no idea what you’re talking about. Including that your school is most definitely doing exactly what the Lafayette families are asking for. DCPS has been doing this for years. I’m sorry for your children that you are concerned for them but won’t figure out a solution in their best interest. |
Looks like one of the moms finally showed up. This post makes no sense though. Were you replying to a different post? |
Is this comment meant to one up mine or show how ridiculous these parents are? If the former don’t worry my kid’s school goes on lockdown frequently enough due to gun violence right outside of the school. |
Kindergarten is compulsory. Not just an entitlement. What are you talking about? If you are 5 by September 30 you are enrolled in K. If you are 6 by September 30 you are enrolled in 1st. |
It’s not a “policy” so much as it is “the law.” They absolutely are required by law to enter kindergarten if they are 5 by the cut off. § 38–202. Establishment of school attendance requirements. (a) Every parent, guardian, or other person, who resides permanently or temporarily in the District during any school year and who has custody or control of a minor who has reached the age of 5 years or will become 5 years of age on or before September 30th of the current school year shall place the minor in regular attendance in an educational institution during the period of each year when the public schools of the District are in session. |
I think in a perfect world I would actually prefer that schools have the flexibility to meet students where they are and give them another year (or start them early!) as appropriate. The strictness is kind of silly. But the worst and most unfair is being strict for some but not for others, which is apparently what is happening now. |
Please read what you posted. School for children who turn 5 on or before 9/30 is compulsory. There is *NO* requirement that those children be enrolled in a particular grade. NOTABLY there no requirement that if a child turn 6 before 9/30 they MUST be put into 1st grade. That is made up. Please. If you’re going to comment about entitlement do know what you’re talking about. |
DP here, yes! It is exactly that. At 5, children have to be enrolled in a school or officially reported to be homeschooled, which is also accepted. Also 6 year old is still acceptable for Kindergarten. Many kids would be 5/6 yr old based on their birth date. |
Yes, its my understanding that there is a min age requirement, but not a max. |
This is correct and why DC cannot tell private schools they cannot redshirt. The second part, the matriculation age, is DCPS policy. Look I'm sorry people want to buy their kids an extra year of school so they can be a bench athlete at low major school but parents are aware of DCPS policy and the fact that a principal buddied up with parents and let them do it and the school is now saying no is not threatening kindergarten access for all DCPS students as the Lafayette lobbying suggests. There are certainly arguments about DCPS allowing for flexibility in holding students back when assessments have proven it necessary but that's not what this is and it's frankly offensive how the parents are treating this situation. |
It wasn't like these families were shying away from the cameras WRT being "found" for CPS. |
This is blatantly untrue. |
This is wrong. The law is that kids must be in school by 5. A date by which they MUST be in school (not a date where if you're born before that you're entitled to be in K... that doesn't even make any sense and would mean any child below X date is entitled to start K... even if they're 2). DCPS POLICY is that kids are placed into school according to an age cut off. If you think DC doesn't have a *policy*, I assume you think I can choose any grade I want for any of my children? |
