I think your latter conclusion is the correct one.

3400 Park employees were fired. Probably most of them worked outside of DC.

That's just the first one that comes to mind. You can figure out more.

Maybe they can convince the state to offer them unemployment, but goes against everything civil service laws are supposed to protect against.

Sorry to be clear - just firing them with no notice, no severence, no consideration of years of service - that's what goes against civil service protections.

Does CFPB have a union?

Yes, they are part of the Treasury Employees union.

I'm confused on why some are claiming this is illegal. Does the government still need cause to fire probationary employees, or are they considered at-will? What will the legal argument be from unions claiming they will sue on behalf of fired probationary employees?

Yes, even for probationary employees, firing is supposed to be due to poor performance, not just because. Even they have some rights (though fewer).

Depends. Most are one yr. Some law enforcement can be up to three years.

So sad. The federal government government needs new blood and these firings hit where it hurts. Not sure why Trump wants to have unemployment skyrocket.

Leaders at the Office of Personnel Management met with federal agency representatives on Thursday and advised them to lay off most probationary employees, according to a person familiar with the matter who was not authorized to speak publicly. According to the most recent data, the federal government employs roughly 220,000 employees in their one-year probationary period
