We’ve been to Edinburgh twice. We love the city. But we never really officially toured George Square or met with anyone. I hear Durham and Exeter are beautiful campuses and Bristol is more of a City campus. Is your son at Durham or Bristol now? What did he decide? |
DS is awaiting Edinburgh and St Andrews decisions, but we do worry about how Americans are viewed there. |
My experience is that people leave me alone if I merely say I am not into politics. I can say the current US administration is not liked by most people in Europe or Asia. |
He has conditional offers for econ from Durham, Bristol and Leeds. Waiting to hear from Edinburgh. Declined by Manchester. He really liked Durham but I think he’s now wondering whether it might feel a bit small after a few years. For that reason, he didn’t look at St Andrews. Loved the vibe of Bristol but didn’t like not having a proper campus. |
I agree with Bristol. DS also accepted to Bristol. The central area where a lot of the buildings are is ok. Edinburgh doesnt have a proper campus either. DS is also waiting on Edinburgh. His classes would be around George Square, same as your son. But the city is just amazing. He is absolutely in love with the city. |
I think Bristol and Edinburgh have pretty similar vibes. Both have historic urban centers, a pretty vibrant community, urban campuses and a small (big) city environment that kids either absolutely love or will be lost in it.
Edinburgh is just an amazing university town that in my opinion is a few steps above Bristol. |
If I could back in time today, I would have applied to Edinburgh. I absolutely love that city. And the fact the university is pretty good too would be a nice combo for sure! |
DP. Just my personal experience, but: My spouse is English, we visit there often, and see family and friends all over (Scotland and Wales as well as England). PP, I would not worry about how individual Americans are viewed. While people in the UK are not fans of this utterly execrable administration, I've never yet seen anyone over there conflate Trumpism with individual American students or tourists. I've actually gotten only pity and commiseration coming my way, when people there realize I'm from the US. Your college student will be fine. Any bellend who tried to make your kid a target for anti-US sentiment would probably get sorted quickly by other students! |
He is right to worry. My friend did econ at Durham and was pretty sick of it by the end. I had a couple of great weekends there, but three years would be a lot. Friends that went to Leeds, Bristol and Edinburgh had a much better time. One thing to bear in mind - the weather is significantly better in Bristol than Edinburgh. Still not great, but you will have more warmish days…I have only heard great things about the city and University. |
It is nothing like the US. I attended Oxford and didn’t know anyone in these societies. It was maybe one or two percent of students. And if you don’t already know about them, you won’t be let in. They have seen Saltburn now and know the risks… |
Is there anybody here whose kid applied through UCAS in January?
If so, any responses yet? |
DS applied mid January to St Andrews, Edinburgh (2 different programs), Bristol and Exeter.
He has heard back from Exeter and Bristol very fast with unconditional offers. But he has not yet heard back from Edinburgh or St Andrews. |
Did anyone apply to Edinburg early, say in October? Just curious how quickly you hear back from them. (DC is a junior and planning to apply next year). |
DS applied mid-Jan. offer from Durham within a week. Offers from Bristol and Leeds in Feb. Nothing from Edinburgh yet. |
Edinburgh is typically very slow. Should start to hear something by mid march. |
