Snow day

The last big snow we got (2016ish?) it took 6 days before my Burke neighborhood saw a plow.

That was a historic storm. This is nowhere close to that level. Monday is a certain closure and Tuesday will be either a 2 hour delay or closure.

3 to 5 inches, 8 inches..1 to 2 inches...it doesn't matter how much. Even the threat of an inch of snow is going to close the schools. This thread is such a great indicator of how long some people have lived in this area. It doesn't have to make sense. It never makes any sense. This is just one of the quirks of living in the DMV.

Best to just get some milk, TP and wine this weekend and let what happens happen.

With melting and refreezing, ice will be a factor. But aside from that, 8-10" of snow is a lot to move off of roads and put somewhere else, by experienced crews. This will be the first snow of the season, where crews will be remembering how to plow roads or learning for the first time. So it will take longer, as they get up to speed.

While from PA north 8-10 inches is considered a dusting for FCPS this will be a week long closure.

In the DC area, yes it does take a week. They’re lucky if they can get the roads cleared in 2-3 days. They generally can’t.

They don't have the equipment that northern states have. Also, Northern states get more snow and less ice. Not excusing, just explaining.

I’ve lived in Northern Virginia my whole life and I’ve been a teacher with FCPS for 20 years. Although there is a bit of an unknown with the new superintendent, it’ll probably be Monday and Tuesday off. Wednesday will either be a closure or two hour delay, depending on temps.

If it snows all day Monday, plowing ( outside of main roads) won’t be tackled until Tuesday. Making it almost impossible to open Wednesday.

My app now says 12 inches! If we actually get 12 inches, I think M-W will be off.

Yes, in Fairfax.

Garza was from Texas and afraid of frost.

If there was frozen snow melt on a sidewalk somewhere in Herndon, Garza would close school, even if it was sunny, dry and 50 degrees across the county in Lorton.

Don't forget that half of the area are transplants from southern states and countries. They all turn into Texans the first time they have to drive in anything close to frozen.

Those of us from the north & west (snowy states) and from the midwest (icy states) just shake our heads in awe as the southerners start running into things and driving off the road.

Because snow here has a tenancy to melt a little during the day and then refreeze as a base layer of smooth ice overnight. I much prefer driving at home in CNY in the snow to driving here.
