That's the MCPS way! Confusing language becuase they don't want to clearly state your child has was not selected in the initial lottery. You would definitely know if your child had received a spot. |
You can only appeal if your child was not placed in the lottery. If your child was placed and not selected, there is no appeal. |
You seem to be confused about how the magnet programs and the lottery work. They are not designed to serve only the very top kids-- they're for a randomized group of above-average kids. There's nothing to appeal because they are not deciding the spots based on merit/scores (besides having to clear the bar to get into the lottery.) |
| Yes you are right I’m am very confused and concerned too. My daughter reads 1 book a day. Yes you read it right one book a day and is extra smart in every single subject. Her teacher said she have a super brain. Math homework is literally a 5 min job for her and she is in CES in 5th grade so being a concerned parent I don’t know how I’m gonna accommodate her needs in the low performing school which is our home school. And yes we can’t afford the private. And regarding the appeal I do send a email to the authorities. I don’t know the how these school system works since we move here from uk and it’s not easy to deal with the kid with extra smart mind specially when you don’t have resources and knowledge about how the education system works there. |
You should lobby the BOE and central office. |
There are many other kids who are just as smart as, if not smarter than, your daughter, but unfortunately, they didn’t win the lottery either. We’ll just have to respect the outcome of the lottery. Life will go on and your daughter will just be fine like many others who didn’t win the lottery. |

In the UK you pay for private "public" school.
In the US you pay for housing at a good public school. Middle school isn't very important academically, though. School curriculum and assigned work is a minimum, not a maximum. Give your child homework. |
