Deportation impact

This. I'm a teacher who is a Democrat and who also wants immigration reform. Why? Because I see how much of our resources are devoted to the ELL kids for very little return. A vast majority of their parents do not care about how their kids are doing in school. The parents don't speak English or care to learn, despite our school having a free EL program for parents.

The parents never come for open house or conferences. They rarely return phone calls or emails. School is seen as convenient and free babysitting for them, IMO.

Same here. Seems like it's an unpopular opinion for a teacher to state this in DCUM, but it is the case and not the exception.

Perhaps you are not a very good teacher then. Our Latino parents come to conferences and care very much about their kids' progress. Have you bothered to learn any Spanish? Any Urdu? Any Polish? Ukrainian? Any other language? Most educated people DO speak more than one language and this would help you build relationships with the families in your school as well as just meet basic expectations around being culturally intelligent.

Our families attend our ESL for adults classes. Maybe your families sense your disdain and stay away. Maybe your classroom management needs to improve. I see this periodically. There's no shame in it, we all have things to work on.
I don't know many people who think school is free babysitting, either. And our students who speak other languages mostly outperform our white kids by the time they are in high school. So maybe your schools aren't so great because of the staff. Just saying.

I think some people on this forum are not aware of how large the ESL population is in some FCPS schools. To say it is not an issue is to be disingenuous.

Are these people here illegally? Probably not. Someone can speak another language and live legally in the US. People are blind to this fact..

If these countries are so bad and the good guys can access guns here, why are they not taking back their homelands?

Fairfax may be a sanctuary jurisdiction but there is nothing they can do to stop students from being deported.

Again, most of the school-aged kids are either US citizens or hold asylum visas. Moreover, being a sanctuary city means that Fairfax won't use municipal/county resources to aid and abet ICE in rounding up law-abiding residents. So either ICE has to get big enough to take care of this themselves, or they can do what they are supposed to be doing and focus on criminals.

If they are here without permission they are by definition not law abiding. Everyone here without permission is eligible for deportation. That's what people voted for two weeks ago without any doubt. Fairfax county can't do anything to stop someone from being deported.

I agree with you. As another poster said though, they can’t stop deportation but it doesn’t mean that Fairfax County has to use its resources to assist.

Fairfax county is so close to the nations capital that it is required to report status and it's not a far distance for ice to come get the criminals

Right. ICE. Not a county resource.

No one has said the county would use resources. But they also can't stop it from happening. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

I don’t think anyone on here has said the county would try to stop it from happening, just reiterating that they probably won’t assist.

I believe that you are an out-of-touch white liberal by your use of the word Latino, don't be stupid; report and deportation are coming soon and will clean up the areas. If you want to experience lawlessness, move to another country and enroll your kids there.

Fairfax likes to flaunt Republican policies whenever it can and now some folks are going to look to reciprocate.

So when states want to enforce federal immigration law by arresting illegal immigrants, they are sued by Democrats using the supremacy clause (see 9th Circuit), but when localities want to ignore federal immigration enforcement, they should be allowed to?

I just listened to a podcast on this. It is expensive and time consuming to deport families with children. To get the big news impact, they will start with single men. The focus will be on the countries who accept the most flights per day/week and the countries willing to accept people from 3rd countries. It will likely be easiest to start with workplace raids - think meat processing plants and construction sites.

Families at local schools or your self-employed handyman or landscaper are likely safe for a a while. Families may self-deport out of fear or the influx of new students may slow down.

Yup and the majority of their kids are respectful and want to learn unlike a lot of the entitled rich kids who whine and complain about everything. Their entitled parents who run to the principal any time a teacher tells their child no or that their behavior is inappropriate because you know they are "involved" in the PTA

Huh? What are you drinking on about? The reason this happens is because the schools are over run by esol undocumented that the school doesn't focus on the standard middle of the road kids. The fact that undocumented don't contribute to the community by PTA volunteering is also a tell tale sign.

In my experience, PTA is a very white American concept, but immigrant families contribute to the school and to the kids in other ways. This goes for high-income immigrants from Asian countries as much as it does for undocumented immigrants from Latin America. There's more than one way to contribute, but sitting in a room once a month following Robert's Rules of Order is a distinctly white American one.

Do enlighten us... how?

Obama counted turn arounds at the border as deportations.

Eh I think some just like to gaslight others about what is going on in our own schools like the teacher above. We see the low scores, disruptions and overall decline in the schools. Looks like the majority of voters saw the same thing in their own communities.

The new border czar is recommending them to self-deport. https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-tom-homan-immigration-self-deport-1984187

Was the podcast hosted by Stephen Miller? Because otherwise it's just random people spitballing. Miller looks like he is planning on snatching up anyone here illegally. Families deported together and Trump says there is no price tag.

LOL, an overworked teacher is supposed to learn Urdu?

Give me a break.

Right, but what in that question suggests that the county will resist? There is a post at 11:29 that reads, "Moreover, being a sanctuary city means that Fairfax won't use municipal/county resources to aid and abet ICE in rounding up law-abiding residents". So while the county might not resist, it might also not assist and it shouldn't be expected to.
