Simone Biles

I always worried those really young girls of the previous era were going to suffer long-term damage to their bodies. Can anyone with expertise weigh in on that?

This is still a very high risk high reward sport where athletes are still very much at risk of getting injured. There's a lot of people who could have been competing at the games had they not had a bad injury in the run-up to the Olympics. But because the sport rewards such high difficulty skills, it often makes more sense for people to continue competing into their twenties because they are able to master hard skills and then develop more power to do them and also develop the mental strength to handle the pressure of competing at the highest levels.

In the United States, the leadership of the elite team was handed to two former senior elite gymnast who had competed into their twenties and I think they definitely take that mentality in supporting athletes. Competing at older ages and doing more to find ways to support them continuing, whereas under the Karoyli system They basically treated the athletes like horses and wanted to put the older athletes out to pasture.

I used to feel this way, but those girls suffered so much physical and emotional abuse and look so frightened and malnourished compared to gymnasts of today. I love that this generation of gymnasts look like athletes and are no longer considered over the hill at 19.

It helps that US gymnastics is no longer centralized and run by the Karolyis. The Karolyis used to run all the national selection camps at their ranch (where the girls were starved), the national team for the Olympics, etc.

So the National training system still exists. The Karoyli ranch was shut down (And good riddance because it was a really terrible place for abariety of reasons) p The athletes are still expected to get together for training camps every month or so. I think there's a lot more flexibility for athletes who are in college and training at the collegiate level. It is led by two former elites, Chellsie Memmel and Alicia Sacramone and A coach named Dan Brown. Chellsie and Alicia have made it pretty clear that they're trying to create a training system that they wished that they had had when they were gymnasts and so they are doing a lot more to focus on good nutrition recovery and making sure things are athlete centered, which is why you pretty much never see Chellsie on camera.

Not like other countries. You still have to get yourself to the level where you can go to these camps and manage your expenses by yourself.

Not like some countries where they sort very young kids for body type and then fund their entire training and expenses. Why do you think China is do dominant in synchronized diving? Those divers were probably sorted and paired together as kids.

I think access to college programs for these elite gymnasts has been a huge success, as well. They get to feel like part of a team, train slightly less difficult routines, and be with people their age. It's so good mentally for them, can be full of joy, and fills those gaps between Olympic cycles.

I was sorry to hear that Suni didn't have a better experience at Auburn, but it sounds like Jordan really enjoyed UCLA.

??????

Every bit of coverage on NBC has been hyping "two all around gold medalists" in the team final and all around final. They've done a couple of pieces on Lee's health problems. She's getting a good bit of coverage. Not Biles level coverage, but nobody is shorting her. It's just that Biles is the GOAT. You don't see talent like that very often and she's got a comeback narrative that you can't beat.

The lead gymnast from Brazil (Rebecca Andrade) is also getting a lot of praise and attention. She's also amazing. It's just that she's not Biles level of amazing.

It's wild that Biles gets so much criticism. She is objectively speaking the best female gymnast ever. Why do people pick her apart so much?

And yes, if someone doesn't know that Suni got all around gold and Biles dropped out, they have paid zero attention to women's gymnastics in the last four years.

1. Because she's Black

2. Because she makes it look easy! This stuff that no other human in the world can do - she makes it look like taking a gentle stroll.

I think in 2021 Simone absolutely 100% made the correct choice to pull out of the competition because in her mental state she would not have been safe to compete the plan skills and it was just too dangerous for her to try and improvise safer skills to do on the fly. Had she competed her routines with her inability to do twisting safely, she could have very easily gotten a concussion or been paralyzed or even killed herself. There have been several extremely sad and scary stories of gymnast becoming paralyzed because of bad landings.

It is also important to know that Simone has competed with kidney stones and broken toes and a bunch of other injuries.

Because she pulled out saying it was a mental injury A lot of non-gymnasts pundits who have never competed at the high level claimed she was selfish and weak and couldn't handle the pressure. I think that had she had a physical injury.

This Olympic games has really been about her competing under her own terms

But I am wondering what everybody else feels about the big fake eyelashes? (Track and field women wear them too). It just looks stupid to me.......... but am getting use to it.

What do you think?

I think you don't understand people different than you have different cultures and dress and style differently than you. You don't have to like every style every culture has.

Oh. (Looking you up and down)

Which culture are the Kardashian lashes from? and don’t try to say Armenian.

I’m confused. Aren’t our Olympic athletes quite literally representing… the United States of America? Isn’t that our culture?

Sorry you're confused
But no, the culture in NYC is different than the culture in Austin, San Francisco, Duluth, Miami, Salt Lake City, Nashville just to name major cities so there is no confusion.
But all are American, just variations

Still not clear? Maybe we start by defining the word "culture" so we're on the same page

Yes. Do that. Also explain what it means to compete for the United States of America in international competition, as opposed to representing NYC or Miami or Duluth in national competition.

Do you think we have a single unified national culture where everyone does their hair and makeup the same way, regardless of age, ethnicity, and location? What are the official "USA" eye makeup and lash styles? When do younger generations get to have input on them?

But with the muscle development of a grown woman. Of course she would be able to get more rotations in and just about every event is easier, the shorter you are.

Are any of the other top gymnast that short?

The one I can think of offhand is Joscelyn Robertson who is around 4’8”. I think Jordan is like 4’11”. Most other gymnasts you see now are like in the 5 foot to 5’3” range.

Going back to how outsiders pit the women against one another, I was so touched to read about Simone Biles giving Suni Lee a pep talk after she landed on her derrière and felt so discouraged she didn’t feel she could continue.

Simone’s encouragement got Suni back into the competition. Suni then asked Simone to stand next to the uneven bars while she was doing her event. Simone cheered her on helping Suni finish the competition.

The love and supportiveness between Simone and Suni shines bright in this story, but I’ve seen no one other than the NYT give any airspace to how their friendship and how they support one another.

Simone is the GOAT not only because she is a great gymnast but also because she is a phenomenal person whose compassion and kindness make her a true leader.

I don’t care what she does with her lashes (although I do think they’re stupid looking) you’re the one who brought up “culture”.

(Since you’re obviously simple-minded: these ugly lashes and talon nails aren’t “muh culture!”, they’re just a trendy style preference. The “culture” which supports these dumb trends is our current US culture, or TikTok so maybe Chinese?, so really, WTH are you even talking about?)

Gotta play that card. Predictable.

When she was a kid, she spent a whole year defending her hairstyle choices.

Quelle horreur!

It really was. I’ve never seen a child targeted like that publicly ever before and basically called ugly in front of the whole country. Quite the spectacle but she handled it with grace.

She didn't bring up culture, she's responding to your response to me. I didn't bring it up either. I think you are the simple minded one blathering on about the look of these gymnasts just because it's not your preference .

The rest of what you wrote sounds like nonsense. I can guess what's prompting your tirade. So sad you don't get to see gymnasts whose look you like.

Or it could be that some of us just don't get having all that kind of makeup and jewelry on when you are playing sports. I feel the same way when I see jewelry and makeup on any athletes regardless of culture. That would drive me nuts!

I mean if you're going to have a video camera up in your face constantly, maybe you would feel more comfortable wearing makeup. There are lots of athletes that don't really wear makeup. I don't think Jade Carey wears anything.

When I think of athletes in make up I think of synchronized swimming

I do agree with you, her lashes are not flattering. Pretty woman, she does not have to go to those extremes. That being said I’m getting a little sick of her. Next please.

Jade absolutely does wear makeup. She has on a face of full coverage foundation, etc. It's just well done and thus subtle.

Jay did a little video about what's in her gym bag and she only wears mascara, blush and pink lip gloss She must have a really good skin care regimen.
