??????

Every bit of coverage on NBC has been hyping "two all around gold medalists" in the team final and all around final. They've done a couple of pieces on Lee's health problems. She's getting a good bit of coverage. Not Biles level coverage, but nobody is shorting her. It's just that Biles is the GOAT. You don't see talent like that very often and she's got a comeback narrative that you can't beat.

The lead gymnast from Brazil (Rebecca Andrade) is also getting a lot of praise and attention. She's also amazing. It's just that she's not Biles level of amazing.

It's wild that Biles gets so much criticism. She is objectively speaking the best female gymnast ever. Why do people pick her apart so much?

And yes, if someone doesn't know that Suni got all around gold and Biles dropped out, they have paid zero attention to women's gymnastics in the last four years.

1. Because she's Black

Gotta play that card. Predictable.

When she was a kid, she spent a whole year defending her hairstyle choices.

Quelle horreur!

But I am wondering what everybody else feels about the big fake eyelashes? (Track and field women wear them too). It just looks stupid to me.......... but am getting use to it.

What do you think?

I think you don't understand people different than you have different cultures and dress and style differently than you. You don't have to like every style every culture has.

Oh. (Looking you up and down)

Which culture are the Kardashian lashes from? and don’t try to say Armenian.

I’m confused. Aren’t our Olympic athletes quite literally representing… the United States of America? Isn’t that our culture?

Sorry you're confused
But no, the culture in NYC is different than the culture in Austin, San Francisco, Duluth, Miami, Salt Lake City, Nashville just to name major cities so there is no confusion.
But all are American, just variations

Still not clear? Maybe we start by defining the word "culture" so we're on the same page

Yes. Do that. Also explain what it means to compete for the United States of America in international competition, as opposed to representing NYC or Miami or Duluth in national competition.

You first, since this seems to be a "you" issue

Weird response. You’re the one who brought it up.

Hint: when one is representing one’s *country*, one is representing the “culture” of one’s *country*. Not one’s city, or neighborhood, or group of friends.

Oh, see I'm not PP you were bickering with. Evidently she has better things to do then talk to a troll. US has no national sports program. If people want to achieve at high levels, they pay their own way until they get gold. Why should they modify their own preferences to fit some "cultural" mold you think they should have. You want uniformity? Great, start a national sports program like China has.

Yeah, but Simone's scores and difficulty are always above Suni. Suni never beats Simone. Unless something goes wrong and Simone drops out or makes a huge mistake, Suni is competing for the Silver or Bronze in AA. She just doesn't have the difficulty level.

And, they are both amazing.

I don’t think the muscular gymnasts of today do as well on balance beam as the leaner gymnasts who still had incredible strength from the 80s and 90s. The flexibility and balance seemed better. It was more graceful. And these gymnasts were not underweight.

Many of the "graceful" gymnasts in the 80s and 90s were starved.

I just saw a cool Whoop commercial today with Sha Carri Richardson featuring her fingernails!! Something about coordinating the green band with her nails and outfit. I googled it and found out it was out as late as April. But so cool!

You seem to think only your “culture” is representative of America. Guess what? You’re wrong.

I would disagree. I think Simone has one of the best beam series ever she stills her back hand spring layout layout series perfectly. I've never seen her do it with a balance check in years. She does struggle on the side Ariel a bit

Or it could be that some of us just don't get having all that kind of makeup and jewelry on when you are playing sports. I feel the same way when I see jewelry and makeup on any athletes regardless of culture. That would drive me nuts!

I mean if you're going to have a video camera up in your face constantly, maybe you would feel more comfortable wearing makeup. There are lots of athletes that don't really wear makeup. I don't think Jade Carey wears anything.

Absolutely. It's just an explanation why Simone gets more attention from commentators, etc. It's absolutely no knock to Suni; she's amazing. But Simone is at another level and all of the gymnasts know it.

Simone has been competing as a senior elite since 2013. She did take some breaks but she's honestly even better as an athlete than she was in 2016 when she won her first set of gold medals. She is training harder skills and she is able to better handle the pressure.

Jade absolutely does wear makeup. She has on a face of full coverage foundation, etc. It's just well done and thus subtle.

I used to feel this way, but those girls suffered so much physical and emotional abuse and look so frightened and malnourished compared to gymnasts of today. I love that this generation of gymnasts look like athletes and are no longer considered over the hill at 19.

It helps that US gymnastics is no longer centralized and run by the Karolyis. The Karolyis used to run all the national selection camps at their ranch (where the girls were starved), the national team for the Olympics, etc.

So the National training system still exists. The Karoyli ranch was shut down (And good riddance because it was a really terrible place for abariety of reasons) p The athletes are still expected to get together for training camps every month or so. I think there's a lot more flexibility for athletes who are in college and training at the collegiate level. It is led by two former elites, Chellsie Memmel and Alicia Sacramone and A coach named Dan Brown. Chellsie and Alicia have made it pretty clear that they're trying to create a training system that they wished that they had had when they were gymnasts and so they are doing a lot more to focus on good nutrition recovery and making sure things are athlete centered, which is why you pretty much never see Chellsie on camera.
