| Someone on another thread said they jumped from 90’s to teens so yes they are making a lot of offers off the waitlist. |
| It hasn’t gone from nineties to teens but it has dropped about 50 places (I know because my child was 140 + on waitlist and is now in the 80s) |
+1 We were originally high fifties and turned down a spot last week. |
Maybe that’s why we dropped down one place! I remain hopeful! |
| Will there be an additional AP next year? |
They hired a 9th grade AP last month. Not sure if that's to replace the current one or if that person is moving up with the current 9th graders. https://x.com/drhspeaks/status/1784280127125200936 |
| DC high schools should offer kids equal opportunities. I know a kid who is just a terrific soccer player and was planning to play at JR but will now feed to Macarthur. This kid, a first gen college applicant, could have benefited from a school where he would have played soccer and possibly won a scholarship. Now he will go to the small, quirky school with few sports and activities. This is one of the many reasons why DCPS sucks. There should be a way for kids who want sports to go to a school that has them. |
NP and I hadn’t thought of it from that perspective. I agree with you. This is a clear situation where the schools don’t offer the same opportunities. There should be some uniformity around neighborhood HSs. |
The flip side is the hundreds of kids at Deal and J-R who never get to play on a school team because those schools are huge and tryouts are super-competitive. Meanwhile, the terrific soccer player would be on a relatively weak team at pretty much all DCPS high schools other than J-R. MacArthur is not the exception here; it's J-R. And that problem is why MacArthur was created. |
I wonder if you know much about soccer in this country? Almost nobody would get recruited to play college ball from a HS team. If you want to play in college, you generally must play on a private club team as they are much more competitive and they travel to important tournaments where coaches recruit. Nobody recruits from high school teams unless you are like some immigrant phenom with top .0001% athletic ability and the WaPo is writing articles about you. |
Dude. This is just not true. My sister got recruited to play college soccer and offered a scholarship from a scout watching her high school team. |
DCPS rules - You can play on another DCPS team if your DCPS school does not have a team/that sport. So this kid could try out/play at JR or Walls if s/he wants to. |
MacArthur has a team. The poster's lament is that the team is not J-R calibre. |
Same PP here. Also, by the time terrific soccer player gets to Macarthur, the school will have 4 years of students and a soccer team as competitive as any other DCPS, except for J-R due to its over-sized pool of candidates. |
What year was this? PP is absolutely correct. Statistically, 0% of kids get recruited from a HS team and you will never see any scouts watching HS soccer. The best soccer players are on Academy teams and can't even play for their HS teams (expressly, not allowed). Maybe there is some national tournament of only the best HS teams...but again, the best players aren't playing in those tournaments. Football is really the only sport these days where the HS team is the most critical...somewhat basketball, but AAU teams are still more critical. HS crew team is also important to qualify for the top regattas, although individual Erg times are more important than how the team performs (but you want to attend a school or be part of a club that has good coaching and tracks this stuff). |
