DC high schools should offer kids equal opportunities. I know a kid who is just a terrific soccer player and was planning to play at JR but will now feed to Macarthur. This kid, a first gen college applicant, could have benefited from a school where he would have played soccer and possibly won a scholarship. Now he will go to the small, quirky school with few sports and activities. This is one of the many reasons why DCPS sucks. There should be a way for kids who want sports to go to a school that has them.
I wonder if you know much about soccer in this country? Almost nobody would get recruited to play college ball from a HS team. If you want to play in college, you generally must play on a private club team as they are much more competitive and they travel to important tournaments where coaches recruit. Nobody recruits from high school teams unless you are like some immigrant phenom with top .0001% athletic ability and the WaPo is writing articles about you.
Dude. This is just not true. My sister got recruited to play college soccer and offered a scholarship from a scout watching her high school team.
What year was this? PP is absolutely correct. Statistically, 0% of kids get recruited from a HS team and you will never see any scouts watching HS soccer. The best soccer players are on Academy teams and can't even play for their HS teams (expressly, not allowed). Maybe there is some national tournament of only the best HS teams...but again, the best players aren't playing in those tournaments. Football is really the only sport these days where the HS team is the most critical...somewhat basketball, but AAU teams are still more critical. HS crew team is also important to qualify for the top regattas, although individual Erg times are more important than how the team performs (but you want to attend a school or be part of a club that has good coaching and tracks this stuff).
