DC high schools should offer kids equal opportunities. I know a kid who is just a terrific soccer player and was planning to play at JR but will now feed to Macarthur. This kid, a first gen college applicant, could have benefited from a school where he would have played soccer and possibly won a scholarship. Now he will go to the small, quirky school with few sports and activities. This is one of the many reasons why DCPS sucks. There should be a way for kids who want sports to go to a school that has them.
The flip side is the hundreds of kids at Deal and J-R who never get to play on a school team because those schools are huge and tryouts are super-competitive. Meanwhile, the terrific soccer player would be on a relatively weak team at pretty much all DCPS high schools other than J-R. MacArthur is not the exception here; it's J-R. And that problem is why MacArthur was created.
