Celebrities who can't act

I saw 2 of his dramatic movies, and wanted my money back.

I heard the one with Tea Leonie was decent, but I haven’t taken the time to watch it

+1. Sandler should have stuck with comedy, like Seinfeld did. I realize tastes differ, but I find Sandler's comedy annoying because it's always based around being a cute dufus and he outgrew cute a few decades ago. His dramatic acting, though, is on another level of bad.

why? Sandler makes much more money in movies rather than comedy shows.

The most overrated of them all has to be Natalie Portman. Can someone give me one good role she's played? And do I see her out on the awards circuit right now??? She is truly a terrible actress.

Earl Tom Cruise was the best with Rainman and Born on the Fourth of July. He was also great in Tropic Thunder and Interview with a Vampire. All four different from his typical hero roles such as the MI and TG franchises. I think TC can act when he is not relying on special effects and speed adrenaline.

Agreed. Sure he's the same in all of the Mission Impossible movies, but you're forgetting how broad his resume actually is. I don't like him as a human but the man can act.

Julia Roberts is another one who appears to be herself onscreen. A lot of overexposed A list actresses are the same. Think: Jen Aniston.

Disagree with Jen Aniston. No matter what, I always enjoy her movies.

Go watch Cake, exceptional performance.

Yes, this was the one movie where she really played someone against type. She was also good in Dumplin.

I know she got raves for Cake, but I didn't think her performance was very good. It was Jennifer Aniston walking around wincing a lot. I thought she was very good in The Good Girl but then she never parlayed that into anything, just more Rachel Green roles in rom-coms.

rom com is where she lives, and that is fine

The Object of My Affection and Picture Perfect are 2 of my faves

Fine. We can still have the opinion that he's a bad dramatic actor.

Same! It seems like her on-screen persona is always about being the most beautiful, thinnest, and best-dressed in the room. Which she already is. You never see her playing a homeless woman. The worst was Big Little Lies, where all the other characters were constantly telling her how beautiful she is.

I feel like you missed the subtleties of her acting and her character in that show. Or maybe I just give her too much credit.

Haha, yes, I must have missed the subtleties. The show had a lot of subtleties, but in her case I thought those subtleties were down to the screenwriting and plot instead of her acting, and basically she played herself.

She lucked into the Hermione role, which propelled her to stardom despite no acting ability.

And Rupert Grint is amazing? He lucked out too!

DP here. Have you see Sick Note? Rupert Grint can act. Emma Watson is a trainwreck in every performance. It's basically Emma Watson being really self conscious and trying reeeaally hard to be the character. She doesn't have a single acting bone in her body.

I liked Sick Note. But I thought Rupert Grint was just being Rupert Grint, granted an older Rupert Grint than we knew in Harry Potter.

Nobody is going to mention Halle Berry? She was passable in her really early stuff, and just went downhill. Whoever her acting coach was did her EXTREMELY dirty.

But…there was no one prettier than 1990s Halle.

Fair enough, you may have a point. He may have just lucked out too and then gotten roles that fit his RL personality after Harry Potter.

I literally only remember Halle Berry for being really hot and a Bond girl. That's all I remember about her. That and the Oscars kiss with Adrien Brody. I'm a straight woman so that shouldn't be all I remember about Halle Berry. Even when she's in a movie she's not really acting a role, she's literally being a Hot Girl.

So yeah, a lot of talented, hard-working community theater actresses with average looks were passed over for a highly beautiful woman who can't act for s***t. And that's how I see Halle Berry.

Anonymous wrote:Andie MacDowell should get a lifetime achievement award for Groundhog Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral. Those are really great movies despite her acting. When I watch them I always think about how her part could have been differently cast. Now her daughter is getting into the business.

Opened this thread to see if she’d been mentioned. She is so wooden. I think casting directors just liked her hair or something.

Nicholas Cage.

He just won an Emmy last night, didn’t he?

DP, but do you know how many untalented jerks have won Emmys, Oscars, and Golden Globes? A hell of a lot. There've been a few articles over the decades about how rigged most awards ceremonies are. And if the available pool of candidates for a particular award isn't very high caliber in a particular year...well, they have to give the award to someone. Part of why I never follow awards shows.
