VA Tech Releasing Some Decisions at 5 pm Today

You can't seriously be basing the acceptances so far on the few people who actually post on DCUM? Good grief. Get ahold of yourself.

Why send the notification to everyone? I'm the parent of a Va resident applicant with 1510 SAT, 4.3 GPA and completed/taking 12 AP courses (only courses left in the school for them to take that build on previous STEM courses) with 5 x AP test 4s and 5s (none lower) including a 5 on AP Calc. Not admitted yesterday although two friends from another HS with lower SAT/ACT scores were, and now wondering what they're looking for as a STEM candidate. Just a very unpleasant surprise for all of us.

So wait - actually rejected, or haven't received a decision yet? If you haven't received a decision, why do you just assume rejection? They have thousands of applicants still to be decided.

My DS got an email and no acceptance and it's so unnerving and leading to all this speculation to calm ourselves down. Why not just tell us straight up?!

Would you prefer no email at all? They're being transparent by keeping you abreast of the situation. Chill out.

That is stressful. But, maybe, as another poster suggested, it's more like rolling. For those who got the email, perhaps your apps were read, and the slam dunks were accepted, but that doesn't mean the others are rejected or deferred. Maybe those are the apps they need more time to consider. Hang in there!

Exactly. What's with all the huffiness when they were very clear that they haven't gotten to all the apps yet? So much entitlement.

If it was emailed to ALL EA applicants everyone would feel better. It sounds like that email may NOT have gone to EA applicants, which of course makes those who didn't get a 5 pm notice assume their application HAS been reviewed and put in a reject or defer pile.

Also, the letter was poorly written. Not impressed. And I noted that the letter said that accepted students shouldn't expect their packet in the mail until LATE February? WTH? Is VTech known to have a poorly run Admissions Dept?

Yes VT is known to have a poorly run admissions department. Who could forget the over enrollment a few years ago and Tech absolutely does yield protect. They are terrible at figuring out their yield. It’s a known thing in the college counseling circles.

This early release is very odd and if my kid had applied, they’d feel pretty put off by it.

VT states clearly on their website that they do not yield protect. If you're "put off" by this, then you must be put off by any school that does rolling admission, which this seems to be.

Their communication was awful.

If they sent out a note last week that they are reviewing applications based on when they were received and will be communicating on batches, fine. But they just “suprised” people by posting some acceptances, emailing others that some would be notified and not notifying others. Poorly thought out when they initially said EA decisions would go out in February.

Since there's no ED this year, and the EA's decision usually comes out in February. It's a possibility that the VT admission office is getting a lot of inquiries about the release date and therefore, decided tp release EA offers in stages.

THIS ^^. Not sure what all the fuss is about. EA at VT is usually in Feb. Having eliminated ED (don't know why), they now have all of those apps combined to deal with. So either everyone waits until February, or they release the ones they've finished.

Really, they should reinstate ED for next year. So many kids just want to apply to their first choice and be done with it.

Very few kids do that. The group least likely to use test prep is surprisingly white kids. Asians prep the most, followed by black kids, then Hispanics.

Dumbest post today

No by didn’t alienate anyone that’s absurd

I read that PP's post and laughed. Clearly, they got their feelings hurt because their kid wasn't one of the first to be notified. So "alienating"!

DP. What a truly silly post. They are not known for the bolded, and they do not yield protect. I predicted a few weeks ago that we'd see posts just like yours once VT decisions started coming out and you did not disappoint.

VT does yield protect. I've read students with above 1500s SAT get rejected, because they tend to go to other schools.

"Yield Protection
Virginia Tech does not participate in yield protection."

Utter BS plenty of kids fit in with no score. My neice her bf and many others my neighbor.

Other forums have plenty of acceptances.

Two different things. Yes, they do accept high stats kids, and yes, they do Yield protect. If you have been reading posts here or had a high stats kid or a TJ kid or their friends apply and get waitlisted/rejected, you know they DO yield protect.

DP. Once again, they do not. They accept plenty of high stats kids. They say on their website very clearly that they do not yield protect. Move on.
