Why send the notification to everyone? I'm the parent of a Va resident applicant with 1510 SAT, 4.3 GPA and completed/taking 12 AP courses (only courses left in the school for them to take that build on previous STEM courses) with 5 x AP test 4s and 5s (none lower) including a 5 on AP Calc. Not admitted yesterday although two friends from another HS with lower SAT/ACT scores were, and now wondering what they're looking for as a STEM candidate. Just a very unpleasant surprise for all of us.

You sound entitled. Admission to any college isn't guaranteed.

You're also sucked into the false narrative that SAT/ACT scores are determining factors. They are not.

ACT and SAT scores really should matter most at an engineering school.

Test optional does not help smart poor kids.

+1 Agree

Test optional helps rich and upper middle class kids with mediocre test scores and likely hurts smart and brilliant poor kids, who don't have access to expensive college counselors and who don't have the money and leisure time to pursue expensive extracurricular activities to pad their applications.

If the upper middle class and rich kids have mediocre grades they’re not getting in. Activities don’t matter much. Expensive test prep does, and poor kids don’t have that.

Huh? What would bashing VT have anything to do with admittance?

I like VT but must agree with PP. telling a slew of people who may or may not be the full pool of EA applicants that they will either get an answer on Dec 21 or by the end of February is pretty nuts.

Why?

NP, why do you think it’s normal? They apparently all applied EA so if they were going to release some early they should have explained more about who those people are or not done it at all. Just bizzare.

I think he means that some people like to claim VT isn't that great a school and some people are surprised when they don't get in. He's only wrong in believing that the two groups are the same people. He's not very bright.

Where did they state all decisions would be released together?

They have inflated grades and curated applications from expensive college counselors.

Going test optional removes the one impartial equalizer available for poor smart kids, and raises opportunities for wealthy and upper middle class kids.

But inflated standardized test scores from expensive tutors are different...RIGHT?

1% of test takers score 1550. An unlimited number can have a 4.0. Have your kid sign up for the free Khan Academy. It works.

Half the applicants admitted to Virginia Tech who submitted test scores have an SAT score between 1220 and 1420 or an ACT score of 26 and 32.

+1.

Why can't that they make all the EA decisions by today is my question. Plenty of other schools did.

UVA just released ED results to its 4400 ED applicants. UVA has over 30,000 EA applicants and is targeting Feb. 15 for results.

I think it's a safe assumption that VT has an equal or greater number of EA applicants than UVA has ED+EA applicants. And VT's application deadline was Nov. 15th, as opposed to UVA's and most others' deadline of Nov. 1.

There are only so many hours in the day that these people have to work through these applications.

+1. These idiots who think prep gets you high SAT scores are clueless! Most are likely the rich crowd that can buy GPA (extra time with fake disgnoses, tutors, volunteer at school and schmooze up to the teacher for extra credit, etc.) but aren't able to do so for the SATs, hence the whining and fake stories to get rid of standardized tests.

Anonymous wrote:The point is that VT has created all this speculation. Ok, so they send 25% acceptances during the 'EA' round. But why send an email to others and no email to others. My DS got an email and no acceptance and it's so unnerving and leading to all this speculation to calm ourselves down. Why not just tell us straight up?!

Would you prefer no email at all? They're being transparent by keeping you abreast of the situation. Chill out.

Anonymous wrote:It says 25% have received offers. Why all the panic and immediate hate for VT? Their yield is nothing to get all freaked out about. Many of those kids in the 25% will have offers from great universities that they will accept. Or financial aid/merit. Or a yes from an instate like MD.

I agree about not being freaked out, but many of these kids will be accepting as VT is their top choice.

Unless they also got into UVA or wherever else they actually want to go. They may have applied to VT as a safety (I know, "VT is not anybody's safety".. is backup better?). Once we know the breakdown between OOS and In-state, we can analyze this better. How many OOS kids do you think will enroll?

I don't think you understood the PP. Many students have VT as their first choice - they're not waiting on UVA or any other place. For many, this would have been their ED school.
