But Mayor Bowser and the DC Council have chosen to pursue a dystopia.

This doesn't have anything to do with "soft on crime" - that is the cover for Leonsis wanting a $500 million renovation to the arena. Youngkin is giving Leonsis the ranch that will make Monumental that much more valuable at Virginia taxpayer expense.

The only way that I could get behind this, would be if VA applied a toll to all the MD and DC cars who constantly clog the roads.

You’re either new to Alexandria or you weren’t paying attention more than 20 years ago when the strip mall opened. It was always going to be a temporary placeholder for a HUGE urban development with thousands of units in very tall buildings. The stadium is a new wrinkle, but it accelerates the development.

Wait, you think Monumental is paying any taxes? That is the whole point...they are getting the arena and the revenues.

Also, very few will make their way from DC and MD - it is too much of a slog for a weeknight rush hour.

You can't seriously say crime was not a factor at all, they had a press conference about it last March. They put pressure on the USAO to do a temporary pilot project in Chinatown, where they actually prosecuted some cases. If that is your claim you have not spent time in Chinatown since 2019, especially post cv.

I suspect TIF financing. They will pledge future increases in things like sales tax and property taxes to pay the debt service on the bonds they issue for this. Tax increment financing.

If the arena in DC is still used for concerts and they bring the Mystics back, wonder how many nights a year that will be? The Mystics are not nearly the draw of the Caps. Shame they wasted $$$ building that arena in Capitol Hts, would have been better for the city and the impacted humans if they had instead updated and expanded St. Es and adjusted the law re: involuntary commitment, as California has done under Newsome. So not new low income housing or safe use zone where the arena stands, just a lot less revenue.

Virginia is offering $1 billion. This is great for crystal city hotel and restaurants because they won’t be saddled with extra taxes to pay for Alexandria’s albatross.
