My brothers mother in law is 84 and has never worked one single hour in her life or went to college
She got married a few months after HS and moved in with her husband a mechanic for an airline who was 20. She is still married. Her youngest moved out in 1990. She also does zero volunteer work and was not involved in any kids activities. |
You want something different for yourself and that's okay. We are all allowed to want different things. I hope that you get the life that you desire. |
| My unmedicated bipolar older sibling does nothing all day. I mean, he reads, writes, plays guitar and records and lives by the sea. He has never worked. He has it made in some ways (in other was obviously not). |
Did she provide for the family in other ways (ie: mental stimulation, ex: truly gifted cook, active in groups or hobbies)? I could not imagine just sitting like a vegetable in front of television all day. I think such a thing is difficult for active people to comprehend. D.C. seems to attract many low energy people, for some reason. |
Why do you think it's a person? There was so much money to be made in the stock market lately and in 2008 going forward. Everything went up 10X. Didn't even have to pick carefully. The stuff is still going up and now add the experience of it all. |
And what is meaningful? And why do they need to produce something meaningful? |
No one cares. Everyone sees you and your kids for the sad little lab rats you are. |
She does not have friends, not active in any groups and barely cooks. Here was a day once described to me from 30 years ago when husband worked. Get up have breakfast husband make him brown bag lunch, she then like to take a walk, come home nap, get up do a few very minor things have dinner husband. Her husband managed all bills, did every home repair, mowed lawn, took care cars. Worked full time. She did no gardening or even ever had a pet. Her nearest relative was 3,000 miles away so no parties or things |
Okay. Why do you think anyone else cares? |

Work sucks. You get paid to collaborate with people who will talk to you in and outside of work but the minute you're dead or laid off or fired they act all fake and reclusive.

| I’m a nurse and work 12 hour shifts. I try to be productive on my days off but there are days that I do chill. Meh. Also in terms of contributing to society, $$ and being an asset to society are not the same. I would take a teacher, over say, someone in Big Law or Wall St. |
I don't think there is a person on planet earth that literally "does nothing" all day. |
She was a mother. She did something. She just never held a paying job. Stop being a judgmental shrew. |
Do you know so little history that you don’t understand that this is historically normal for an American woman born in 1938, particularly a white American woman born in 1938? They were discouraged from working in active barriers or put up to make it very hard to have careers. It is completely normal for someone her age to have never worked. Clearly she raised children, which is work. |
No. I retired early and my kids are adults. I never said I’ve ALWAYS done nothing. Just the last decade or so. Still not old enough to collect social security btw. |
