NP: VT is great for a few majors, not so great for many others.  I'm not a UVA booster (didn't go there, don't have a kid there), but the primary reason I know people from NoVA go to an OOS flagship is they didn't get into UVA and they aren't CS/engineering majors so VT isn't that compelling and they want the big school/big sports vibe so W&M isn't that compelling.  It's not being a UVA booster, it just seems to be a common story.[/quote]

Sure, it's perfectly fine--but it's not exceptional for much outside of STEM.  And as a tech school, it's going to have a strong bias towards that---which is not what most strong kids in humanities/social sciences/arts etc. are going to want if they have other options.[/quote]

I have two kids who attend/ed VT and both were humanities majors.  VT was their top choice school and has served them exceptionally well.  You're certainly welcome to your opinion, but it doesn't resemble the reality we've experienced.[/quote]
